About "Genetic Resources of Livestock and Poultry"
Livestock and poultry genetic resources are an important part of biodiversity, the material basis for the original innovation of animal husbandry science and technology and the development of modern seed industry, and a strategic resource to ensure the supply of important national livestock products.
On May 29, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced the National Inventory of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources (hereinafter referred to as the Catalogue) approved by the State Council. The Catalogue for the first time clarifies the species types and categories involved in China's livestock and poultry genetic resources, and includes a total of 33 types of domestic livestock and poultry at the level of animal taxonomy "species", including 17 types of traditional livestock and poultry such as pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese, and 16 types of special livestock and poultry such as sika deer, guinea fowl and mink.
The genetic resources of livestock and poultry listed in the Catalogue are the main source of supply of important agricultural and livestock products for urban and rural residents.
The formulation and publication of the Catalogue by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is an important measure to implement the Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on Comprehensively Banning Illegal Wildlife Trade, Eliminating the Bad Habit of Indiscriminately Eating Wild Animals, and Effectively Protecting the People's Life, Health and Safety, and the Animal Husbandry Law of the People's Republic of China, which is of great and far-reaching significance for safeguarding China's biosecurity and ecological security, ensuring the people's life and health, and promoting the sustainable development of animal husbandry.

Livestock and poultry are the most basic elements of livestock production, and good breeds of livestock and poultry are the foundation and core for promoting the development of animal husbandry.
The livestock and poultry species listed in the National Inventory of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources have a long history of domestication, and the production and scientific research technologies such as breeding, breeding, epidemic prevention and disease prevention are mature, which has made important contributions to ensuring the adequate supply of livestock and poultry products in China and meeting the diversified needs of the market.
The release of the Catalogue and the cessation of activities such as the sale and transportation of wild animals for the purpose of consumption are conducive to reducing the spread of diseases by animals to humans, facilitating law enforcement and supervision, reducing public health safety risks, and protecting the people's life and health safety.
In addition, the Catalogue stipulates the types of livestock and poultry, further clarifies the scope of application of the Animal Husbandry Law, so that the protection, breeding, utilization, management, transportation and other activities of livestock and poultry (especially special livestock and poultry) have laws to follow and rules to follow, which is conducive to safeguarding the interests of farmers and further standardizing the production and supervision and management of animal husbandry; on the other hand, it is also conducive to in-depth biological and ecological research in the future, and better understand and utilize these livestock and poultry genetic resources.
Through the formulation of the Catalogue, the agricultural and rural departments and the forestry and grassland departments have further clarified their respective work responsibilities and scope, and terrestrial wild animals are protected and managed by the forestry and grassland departments in accordance with the Wildlife Protection Law, and all are prohibited from being eaten. Livestock and poultry listed in the Catalogue shall be managed by the competent departments of agriculture and rural affairs in accordance with the Animal Husbandry Law. This will help the two sides to coordinate and cooperate, strengthen the law enforcement and supervision of livestock, poultry and wildlife protection, and achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
