Beijing News (reporter Wu Caiqian intern Zhang Congjing) in Beijing Haidian District Xueyuan Road Zhan Chunyuan community, a woodpecker pecking hole in the four-story wall, more than 10 holes lined up in an "arc", through the opening of the wall faintly visible insulation materials inside the wall.
At about 8 o'clock on November 3, the community health service center had found someone to repair the wall.
"Woodpeckers peck holes in the walls to store winter food. These seeds may germinate, causing the walls to loosen and fall off. Li Li, director of the Beijing Panther Wildlife Conservation Station, said residents can hang birds of prey and scare woodpeckers away.

"Woodpeckers peck a hole in about 15 minutes"
In the Zhan Chunyuan Community on Xueyuan Road in Beijing's Haidian District, more than one resident has seen a black-and-white woodpecker, grabbing a hole in the red wall, and as the opening of the cave continues to expand, the wall chips fly in the air.
Ms. Wang, a resident of the community, told the Beijing News that this woodpecker appeared about 3 years ago and will be seen every August and September.
She had seen the woodpecker pecking at a hole in a four-story wall and making a "bang bang bang" sound, pecking out a hole in about 15 minutes. "It can hold firmly against the flat walls, and it was fun to watch at the time." Ms. Wang said.
Residents of the community believe that the woodpecker is pecking at the hole in the wall, possibly because of the reduction of trees in the community. "There were originally six or seven large poplar trees near this building, but after the sun was cut down, there were fewer birds such as magpies."
On the morning of November 3, a reporter from the Beijing News came to the ZhanChunyuan community, and the north wall of Building 30, which was a community health service center, had been repaired, and no woodpecker figure was seen.
The staff of the community health service center surnamed Liu told the Beijing News reporter that at about 8 o'clock on the 3rd, the service center had contacted the staff to repair the wall. She said she had also seen a woodpecker pecking at a tree next to the building, "I don't know why a woodpecker has started pecking at the wall recently, but I haven't seen it for two days." ”
Pecking holes are for storing food, and it is recommended to hang "birds of prey kites" to drive away
"Woodpeckers peck holes in the walls to store winter food." According to Li Li, director of the Beijing Panther Wildlife Conservation Station, the woodpecker in the video is a large spotted woodpecker, a relatively common woodpecker in Beijing, mainly living in some parks in the surrounding mountains and urban areas.
The large-spotted woodpecker generally nests in tall trees, and bugs and nuts are its main food sources. But in the autumn and winter, when there are fewer bugs, woodpeckers choose to store nuts in their holes for the winter.
"Maybe there's a hole in the wall itself that it finds suitable for storing food." Li Li said that the reason why the large spotted woodpecker will peck at the insulation layer of the building may be that there are holes in the surface of the insulation layer, and the sound of knocking on the wall is very similar to tapping the trunk, which makes the woodpecker feel suitable for storing grain.
Some residents of the community are worried that woodpeckers will affect the safety of the building. In this regard, Li Li suggested that local properties and residents pay more attention to the fact that if woodpeckers hide seeds in the wall, when the temperature and humidity are suitable, these seeds may germinate, which will cause the wall to loosen and fall off, and it is easy to smash and injure people.
"People don't hurt woodpeckers and let kites scare them away." For the sake of biodiversity protection, Li Li suggested hanging a bird of prey kite near the pecked wall to scare the woodpecker away, while taking precautions such as fences and cordons.
"The woodpecker should still come, this place is taken in by it." At present, the community has been plugged by pecking walls, but Li Li said that from the habits of woodpeckers, they usually choose the same place to store food for three or five years, and residents of the community should continue to pay attention to the dynamics of woodpeckers.
