On October 28, the National Marine Fishery Biological Germplasm Resource Bank was inaugurated at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. This is the largest marine fishery germplasm resource bank with the largest investment scale, the largest preservation scale and the most advanced facilities in China so far.

The National Marine Fishery Biological Germplasm Resource Bank Project was officially approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2015, with an investment of about 161.75 million yuan, a construction area of 20,650 square meters, 5 floors above ground and 2 floors underground. In September 2020, the project was completed and accepted and put into trial operation, and the current trial operation is in good condition, and the mechanism is basically established.
The National Marine Fishery Biological Germplasm Resource Bank mainly has a marine fishery biological gene resource library, a cell resource library, a microbial resource library, a living resource library, a group resource library, a marine fishery biological germplasm resource data processing center and a large-scale instrument and equipment sharing center, that is, "five libraries and two centers".
Among them, the Marine Fishery Biological Live Resource Bank and supporting laboratories undertake the conservation of live germplasm of marine fishery organisms, covering the core germplasm of 16 new species of nationally reviewed new species, ridge-tailed white shrimp model animals, medaka model animals, tropical coral reef ornamental fish and other rare or excellent live germplasm cultivated by the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, including "Duobao No. 1" of turbot" giant carp, Chinese shrimp "Yellow Sea No. 1", three-wart pike crab "Huangxuan No. 1", kelp "Huangguan No. 1", thorn ginseng "Ginseng No. 1" and other rare or excellent live germplasm of new species cultivated by the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute. Provide a living germplasm and standardized breeding test platform for scientific research such as fine seed creation, green breeding, and resource conservation, and support the smooth progress of many projects such as the national key research and development program "Blue Granary Science and Technology Innovation", the modern agricultural industry technology system, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Since 2005, the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute has carried out research on the collection, collation and preservation of biological living resources in the Yellow Bohai Sea, formulated technical specifications for the collection, collation and preservation of live germplasm resources of fish, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, algae and ginseng; collected and preserved 213 kinds of live organisms, covering fish, shrimp, shellfish, algae, ginseng and other aquatic species, identified, evaluated, innovated and utilized germplasm resources, and bred 16 new varieties of aquatic products for national examination, which promoted the high-quality development of the industry.
The National Marine Fishery Biological Germplasm Resource Bank takes the safe conservation and high-quality utilization of marine fishery biological germplasm resources as the center, and builds a modern fishery biological resources conservation platform according to the protection needs of marine fishery biological germplasm resources in different sea areas of China, and preserves samples to achieve full coverage of important biological resources such as marine economic species, ecological species, endemic species, rare species and endangered species, supporting the revitalization of the aquatic seed industry and serving the national marine power strategy.
The objectives and vision of the resource bank are: to create a national marine fishery biological germplasm resource bank with the largest preservation capacity, the highest level of automation, informatization and modernization, and the most advanced collection and preservation technology and management level around the major needs of the original innovation of national fishery science and technology and the development of fishery modernization, and to build a world-class national aquatic seed industry common key technology innovation center, marine fishery biological diversity conservation center and germplasm resources sharing service center to support the green and high-quality development of fishery.
