When I first watched "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", I felt that this was not an authentic martial arts film.

"Dusk Kiyobei" is like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", which is a different look in Japanese samurai films.
The common samurai, wandering outside, alone, alone, hoping to make a name for himself, like Miyamoto Musashi played by Toshiro Mifune, left his hometown and love to pursue kendo. The protagonist of "Dusk Kiyobei", Kiyobei, a somewhat quiet middle-aged samurai, pursues his wife and children's hot kiln, and usually stays at home to accompany his mother and two daughters.

Ordinary samurai, many of them are prodigal sons, there is no organization behind them, there is no purpose in front, and the samurai Tsubaki Sanshiro, who wanders in all directions in "Heart Stick", walks to the intersection, picks up a branch, throws it into the sky, and the branch lands and points to which direction it goes. Kiyoshi is a small civil servant who keeps to himself, his direction is as clear as a navigation line, and every day, he travels back and forth between his home and office.
Traditional samurai regard the sword as a status symbol, and cherish life. The poor young samurai in "Cutting the Belly" had to replace the knife with a bamboo knife in order to save his beloved wife, but he was found to have lost the rules of the samurai and forced him to cut his abdomen with a bamboo knife. Qingbingwei also sold his long knife and replaced it with a bamboo knife, but he didn't seem to have much pressure, and no one did anything to him.
Most of the samurai considered themselves superior and looked down on the lower class. Kikuchiyo in "Seven Samurai" was originally a farmer, but he often carried a long sword with great power, self-proclaimed samurai, and raised his own value. Kiyobei is an outlier among the samurai, and he confesses that he would rather give up his status as a samurai and become a farmer who cultivates in the soil every day.
Ordinary samurai, on the occasion of duels, often talk like gold, and devote themselves to preparing for the fighting activities that will soon come. Moreover, at the time of the duel, they were neat and sharp, never dragging mud and water, three times five divided by two, in a moment to see the true chapter, divided into high and low, and decided to live and die. Tsubaki Sanro was like this, he swung out a knife, and the opponent played by Nakadai Tatsuya instantly spewed blood and stood on the ground. Qingbingwei did not like to use his hands and feet with people, and was ordered to execute people who also served the lord of the clan, and the parents talked to the person for half a day, with emotion, complaint, and resonance, like the conversation between colleagues at the wine table after work. In the end, the two beat the house to the east and west, made themselves blue and swollen, the situation was terrible, and the demeanor was lost, which was the result.
"Twilight Kiyobei" is a civilian life drama dressed in the guise of a samurai film, which is in line with the consistent style of director Yoji Yamada, borrowing the name of his previous works, this film can also be called "the suffering of men". Qing Bingwei, a middle-aged man, whose wife died of illness, had to work every day, but as a low-level civil servant, he had a meager income, it was difficult to support the family, and he could not do farm work in his free time, and he often stayed up late at night to weave some bamboo cages. The low income made him ill-dressed, and his labor made him unable to take care of personal hygiene, and as a result, he was severely criticized by his superiors, just like the employees were reprimanded by their bosses. Tsubaki Seems to be even less hygienic, and his signature shoulder shaking is precisely because of the insect bite and itch, but this does not hinder his work at all - to clean up the bad guys, not to prevent him from doing a heroic deed and then freely brushing his clothes.
The low income made Qing Bingwei lose face at work, and also made him stagnate in love. He likes the divorced woman played by Riki Miyazawa, but his taciturn and fifty-stone charms make it impossible for him to express his love. He felt that when a woman married, she would suffer with him and would not be able to live such a life, and whoever called the other side of the family was four hundred stones. It's like if your annual income is fifty thousand yuan and someone else's annual salary is four hundred thousand.
Earth-shattering love, Qingbingwei can not provide. For the sake of love, dare to abandon the official position, make enemies with the monstrous lords, and meet each other, that is the drama in "Death Sword" starring Toshiro Mifune.
Kiyobei is not Tsubaki Sanjuro, and he doesn't live at all. This is a realistic samurai, and the freehand life does not belong to him. Every day at dusk, he did not go to the tavern with his colleagues to drink and listen to songs, but walked to the house without turning his head, cooking on the fire, taking care of the elderly and children, so he had a nickname - dusk guards.
Qingbingwei is a portrayal of many modern office workers, and we are also people who go home after work at dusk. He walked back and forth every day, and we took the bus subway or rode more. But in any case, Qingbingwei could still see the sunset along the road and return home, unlike Bai Juyi, the Chinese poet most admired by the Japanese, who could not leave the office at dusk.
