In recent years, some Taiwan media have always liked to taunt the mainland with "glass heartbreak," saying that the mainland cannot withstand pressure and is too fragile. Some Taiwan media said bluntly on the 8th that this method actually highlights Taiwan's own lack of self-confidence, especially in the face of the rise of the mainland, Taiwan's various advantages are gradually fading, and the real object of "glass heartbreak" may not be the mainland, but Taiwan itself.
News that has nothing to do with the mainland also pulls the "glass heart"
Two recent news reports have aroused the attention of the media on the island. According to Taiwan's "Wang Bao" reported on the 8th, one is to report that Taiwan-US mixed-race girls were invited to sing the "National Anthem of the Republic of China" in the United States baseball game, and the other is that Taiwan girls went to Kosovo to call for exclusive networks and strive for "digital diplomacy". Both articles have almost nothing to do with the mainland, but many Taiwanese media still use the headlines of "Strong Country Glass Heartbreak" or "China Glass HeartBreak Again".
The term "glass heart" has been popular on Taiwan's PTT electronic bulletin board (BBS) since 2014, which originally referred to people's fragile and sensitive hearts, and they are easily stimulated and sad. In recent years, the term "glass heart" has been frequently used by some Taiwan media and netizens in news related to the mainland, and most of them involve the issue of "sovereign identity". According to Lianhe Bao, the 2016 mainland film "No Other Love" was boycotted by mainland netizens because it was reported to use "green artist" Dai Lijin and Japanese "anti-China actor" Mizuhara Xizi. Some Taiwan media headlined "Because of the mainland's nationalist glass heart, this time Dai Li endured the suffering." Not long ago, the Taiwanese drama "The Heart of The Wise Son" was removed from the mainland for glorifying Japanese colonial rule, and some Taiwan media headlined "The Glass Heart of a Powerful Country, the Mainland Criticizes the Japanese for The New Taiwan Drama."
But what about the facts? Like the aforementioned Taiwanese girl who went to Kosovo to call for exclusive network domains, it has nothing to do with the mainland, but some Taiwan media have emphasized that "the glass heart of a strong country is broken", "I would like to ask which part of this news incident made which department or opinion leader on the mainland feel heartbroken?" The truth of the matter is often: In a certain news or described event, it may be placed in the interactive situation of cross-strait relations with some sensitivity, but the mainland society may not have the so-called high concern or heated discussion from all walks of life, and ordinary people may not even care at all, but they have been "heartbroken" in the reports of the Taiwan media. "Wang Bao" said bluntly on the 8th that such reports have invisibly pulled the distance between the people on both sides of the strait farther and farther, making the misunderstanding between the two sides of the strait deeper and deeper.
Who is the "glass heart" in the end?
Earlier, Taiwan's Today News Network published an article by a Taiwanese student who came to the mainland, saying that some Taiwanese are still stuck in the stereotype of "the mainland gnawing on the bark." He listed seven major differences between the people on both sides of the strait, such as "Although there are regional differences and cultural differences on the mainland, they are proud to be Chinese, and friends around them have expressed that they do not want to go to the United States and feel that there is no culture there." On the other hand, Taiwan, in contrast, seems to be less cultural, many people have been Kazakh Yang, Kazakh, Japan and South Korea since childhood, and they want to learn everything, but they are not united at all." The final conclusion of the article is: "It turns out that Taiwanese talents are really super glass hearts."
A comment previously published in Taiwan's Zhongshi Electronic News said that if mainland netizens flock to criticize and eventually force the so-called "green artists" to apologize, it is their "glass heart" for "national identity", then some netizens in Taiwan will not be able to avoid this "glass heart" in the face of the "national identity" level that others do not take Taiwan as the highest priority. For example, when Taiwanese artist Wang Mainland went to South Korea to promote the film, claiming to represent China and was encircled and suppressed, "the difference is that the criticism of Taiwan netizens has not made Wang Mainland apologize so far, while the criticism of mainland netizens is enough to make Dai Liren and Mizuhara Xizi bow their heads." In 2017, Chen Fangming, a professor at the Institute of Taiwan Literature at the Pro-Green University of Political Science, criticized the mainland for "the glass heart is so transparent, fragile, and so fragile", and the writer Wang Feng retorted, criticizing people's "glass hearts", and the mainland does not act in any film". ”
Mainland people are not very concerned about Taiwan
Lai Xiangwei, a professor at the Department of Radio, Film and Television of the National Taiwan University of the Arts, believes that some Taiwan media have labeled many incidents as "mainlanders' glass heartbreaks," which is a report that "draws a target first and then shoots an arrow" and a ha-ha mirror style, which violates the news profession. Hu Youwei, director of the Department of Journalism at the Chinese Culture University, said that in the Internet era, some Internet celebrities and Internet commentators can lead the direction of speech, and if someone wants to provoke cross-strait sentiment, the traditional media should play a balancing role, not follow the trend, but look at things from the perspective of the interests of the majority of compatriots on both sides of the strait.
As for whether mainlanders have "glass hearts", Hu Youwei believes that Taiwan's influence and importance on the mainland are different from ten years ago, and at present, the mainland people generally do not pay much attention to what Taiwan is thinking and doing. In the past 40 years of reform and opening up on the other side, talents, funds and technologies have been in place, "Why should we have a glass heart?" "Taiwan netizens say this, but it is unnecessarily excessive projection." In addition, in response to some people's belief that "online dissatisfaction with the mainland may be due to the suppression of international space", Hu Youwei asked why this situation did not occur during the Ma Ying-jeou period, but only after 2016. "Wang Bao" said on the 8th that the ridiculous headline of "Glass Heart" may want to stir up national sentiments, respond to Taiwan's pressure under the principle of one China on the mainland, and satisfy the superiority of some Taiwanese people that "I am different from the mainlanders". However, the practice and mentality of frequently mocking and ridiculing the mainland only highlight Taiwan's own inferiority and lack of self-confidence and widen the rift between the two sides of the strait.
