Niko the Yugoslavs, Mijo the Jews, and Tony, the Italians, were good friends and lived in Dubrovnik, a seaside town in the Croatian region of Yugoslavia. Nico's sister Anna falls in love with Tony and prepares to wait for Nico's father, Captain Baldo, to return from his voyage and get married. Just as Captain Baldo was returning from his voyage and the whole family was having a feast, the German fascists suddenly attacked Dubrovnik and occupied the city. The bourgeoisie also mostly sided with the aggressors. Tony's family all participated in the Italian fascist organization. But the people did not give in. They began a resistance movement under the leadership of the Communist Party. The patriotic Captain Baldo refused to attend a banquet hosted by the fascists and took Tony away. Nico joined the Komsomol group and fought against the invading army. Despite her father's objections, Anna marries Tony. The Fascifers also went on a killing spree of Jews. Tony takes no one to collect Miho's family property, Miho's father is murdered, and Miho escapes. Suspected by Baldo's invaders, Tony leads fascist bandits to capture Baldo and is killed halfway through the escort camp.
