On Friday morning, a whale carcass more than 12 meters in length appeared on the beach in the OCIIAN district of praia grande city in southern São Paulo state. The sight caught the attention of residents.
The body was allegedly pushed onto the beach late at night by the waves. The city government said that some residents reported to the city after seeing the whales.
Because of their large size, the whales attract the attention of local residents. "It was dead when it appeared on the beach. It was so big that workers tried to transport it away, and it looked like it had been dead for a long time. Worker Black Genardo said.
Municipal staff rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area near the whales, and began cleaning up. They used two forklifts and removed the bodies around 9 a.m.
Biologists say the whale is one of the first male adult humpback whales. The whale weighs between 35 and 40 tonnes and is 16 metres long. Scholars say that at this time of year, they migrate to the tropical waters of Brazil to breed.
