These days, most people know rain as one of the greatest solo singers in the history of Korean music. However, 20 years ago, he was just a teenager in a failed boy group trying to become famous. Rain acknowledged that he needed to "talk about it 24 hours or more without sleep," but went on to reveal what he did remember about their meeting. While he doesn't remember the exact date, he did notice that it happened sometime between the winter of 1998 and the spring of 1999. Rain was only 16 years old at the time and had already failed a dozen auditions.
The solo singer star went on to reveal that at the beginning of the audition, Park Chun-young played a song by famous singer Michael Jackson. "I'm not sure why he did it," Rain recalled, "but he... Just repeat playback, you know? It's not surprising to repeat the song once or twice, but Rain said Park Chun-young's repetition of Michael Jackson's song for "four to five hours" was surprising.
"I just danced alone all the time," said Rain, who seemed confused about the process at the time. Afterward, Rain said the founder of JYP Entertainment told him to imitate his movements. He then gave Rain an hour of personal dance lessons.
It should come as no surprise that after spending so much time in his first meeting with Park, Rain has a good feeling for his future. "You're going to feel that way," he explains, "and I thought I passed the audition." However, in the weeks that followed, Park didn't reply to Rain at all!
Over time, Rain became convinced that the founder had forgotten about him. But, exactly a month later, he finally got that decisive call inviting him to join the company. Interestingly, despite his unresponsiveness, Park Reveal revealed a few years ago that he had seen a sparkle on Rain from the first meeting.
I remember when Rain first entered the audition room. His facial expression, his passion, even his sweat, I can remember. Rain reminds me of a hungry little lion. I could tell he really wanted to succeed, but in difficult circumstances, he failed to make it happen. I had never seen such a situation before and I wanted to help him achieve his dreams.
