St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center

Best care, for life

Saint Francis hosptial and medical center has come a long way since 1897, when Berry St. Joseph's sisters opened two rooms near Shelter Hill at Hartford Hospital under extremely fortuitous circumstances. The new hospital provides shelter for immigrants who want their beliefs and traditions to be understood and appreciated.

From the beginning, St. Francis had faced the deadly infectious diseases of the time, typhoid fever, influenza and later polio outbreaks on the front lines. Meanwhile, St. Francis physicians quickly recognized the need to improve health for clinical work, and the first research laboratory opened in 1902, the same year tb outbreak in Hartford and across the United States.

Typhoid fever high-tech

While there are better sanitation conditions, and vaccines and antibiotics have tamed many of the early killers, St. Francis today is busier, tackling medical technology and medical interventions that can't even imagine the threats and diseases of the modern world. But hospital excellence coupled with compassionate care has never changed.

St. Francis is affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital, a Jewish-sponsored institution that opened in 1923. The partnership marks a Catholic and Jewish hospital affiliation for the first time in U.S. history.

As the needs of Connecticut residents evolved, in 2011, John M. The T. Aucom Building opened its doors. The tower is ten stories high and features 70 treatment areas, 13 sheltered ambulance bays, and a rooftop helipad, a new emergency department, 19 new operating rooms and 135 private wards dedicated to orthopedics.

When St. Francis was first built with 32 patients in one ward, it has grown to become the largest Catholic hospital in New England, with 617 licensed inpatient beds, 65 cradles, and five centers of excellence that serve patients at every stage of their lives.

Step forward

In the same way, St. Francis, who inherits the mission of Caring for Sister St. Joseph, has been looking for better ways to deliver, respond to changing market dynamics in a rapidly changing healthcare environment, and the hospital recently adopted a five-year strategic plan aimed at positioning it for future growth.
