Shen Changwen was born in Shanghai on September 26, 1931, graduated from the Shanghai Private Minzhi Journalism College, and served as a proofreader, secretary, editor, director and deputy editor-in-chief of the People's Publishing House from March 1951 to December 1985, and from January 1986 to December 1995, he served as the general manager of Life, Reading and Xinzhi Sanlian Bookstore and the editor-in-chief of Reading Magazine. During this period, the publication of Western classic works "Tolerance", "Theory of Love", "The Third Wave", as well as Cai Zhizhong's cartoons and Jin Yong's works, caused great repercussions in society. The "Reading" magazine under his auspices is considered to be the "most open-minded and most active", and has successively opened Feng Yidai's "Western Book Collection", Wang Zuoliang's "Essay on Reading Poetry", Fan Gang's "Reading Notes on Modern Economics", Zhao Yifan's "Harvard Reading Notes", and many other columns of both literary and ideological nature, making "Reading" magazine a banner in China's intellectual circles.
