The "Overall Plan for the Construction of Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone" clearly defines the development of scientific and technological research and development and high-end manufacturing industry as one of the important industrial directions of the future cooperation zone, and specifically mentions the need to build a high-standard industry-university-research demonstration base, including the University of Macau, and build a technological innovation and transformation center.

"As Macau's only international comprehensive public university, strengthening high-tech R&D and transforming achievements is the general direction of UM's integration into the Greater Bay Area." Song Yonghua, president of UM, said that in the construction of the Greater Bay Area, it is necessary to accelerate the improvement of the scientific and technological innovation system of colleges and universities, especially the original innovation and key core technology research capabilities, and accelerate the scientific research results from "laboratories" to "production lines".
At present, UM has explored its own development model in the transformation of scientific research achievements - through the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute located in the cooperation zone, it has jointly carried out high-level industry-university-research cooperation with mainland enterprises and universities, so as to gradually bring scientific and technological achievements to the market.

As of September 2021, the Institute has received a total of 105 scientific research projects approved and funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Natural Science Foundation of China and other national, provincial and municipal science and technology departments, and 42 research projects entrusted by enterprises.
In the new era of "Internet +", the Greater Bay Area is brewing a new round of high-end industrial transformation. Song Yonghua said that UM will expand and deepen its comprehensive cooperation with the mainland in the research field of "what the country needs and What Macao is good for", so as to achieve collaborative innovation and coordinated development, so as to integrate Macao into the overall situation of national innovation and scientific and technological development.

In order to promote cooperation with enterprise industry incubation in the Greater Bay Area, UM and Zhuhai Huafa Group have jointly established a joint school-enterprise laboratory to carry out in-depth cooperation in the cultivation of high-level talents, industrial incubation and cultivation, intellectual property rights and transformation of scientific research achievements. UM has also jointly established the "Guangdong-Macao Advanced Intelligent Computing Joint Laboratory" with Zhuhai Dahengqin Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. and the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
"This is one of the most representative projects of all-round cooperation between Macao universities and Zhuhai and the Greater Bay Area." Song Yonghua expressed the hope that through participating in the development of the cooperation zone, accelerating the construction of the industry-university-research demonstration base that Macao has deployed in Hengqin, giving full play to the characteristics and advantages of UM, and carrying out high-level industry-university-research cooperation with more enterprises and colleges and universities, etc., to further promote the diversified development of Macao's industries, the in-depth cooperation between Zhuhai and Macao and the construction of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor.
