I bought a grass baby translation of "War and Peace" at the spring book market, stayed in the warehouse as a bedtime reading, bought a high-plant translation of this book just a few times ago, and read the high-level translation when I was at home, just for comparison.
The CaoBao translation is published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House, and The Gao Zhi translation is published by New Literature and Art Publishing House, both of which are famous artists and have good versions. Both editions have original illustrations, which are superior in number and print quality to high-plant illustrations.
From the perspective of translation, the high translation is older because it is translated earlier, and the text and translation habits are older. In addition, many of the dialogues in the original work are interspersed with French and Russian, and the high translation is handled by retaining the original French text and then giving the Chinese translation in parentheses. The CaoBao translation is more cleverly handled, which is to directly translate the French part into Chinese, but to change the font to show the difference, I think this treatment is more suitable for reading than the high translation.
The ancients said that "old books are not tired of reading a hundred times", I think it should be a good book that is not tired of reading a hundred times, only the classics are worth reading repeatedly, such as such a famous book like "War and Peace", this book I have seen the translation of Grass Baby before, but this rereading still has new feelings.
There is a passage in the book about a governess attending a feast hosted by his master, at which he struggles to remember the names of all dishes and wines in order to write letters to his family to show off, and he needs wine not for pleasure, but because of a sincere curiosity. I often have book friends ask me which version of so-and-so's book is good, which is also a kind of lifting for me, but if I only know the title of the book and do not read it, it is really no different from this governess.
