First performed in 1978, "Newsboy" was a tribute play created by China Children's Arts to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of New China, and played an important role in promoting the creation of children's dramas in the country at that time. Set against the backdrop of the southern Anhui Incident, "Newsboy" depicts the story of a group of small newspaper boys in Chongqing's Xinhua Daily who grew up rapidly in the struggle under the education and care of Zhou Enlai. This is a collective creation, co-created by Shao Chongfei, who was the captain of the Chinese children's art actor team at the time, Zhu Yi, director of children's drama, Wang Zheng, playwright, and Lin Kehuan, a critic.

Directed by Jiao Gang, a famous director of Chinese children's art, this rehearsal gathered three generations of actors from the old, middle and young generations of Chinese children's art. Xue Bai, the actor of "La Yue" in the film version of "Newsboy", served as the performance director of the play, and she said that she learned a lot of experience and spirit from the older generation of artists, hoping to pass these on to young actors.
