Born on 10 April 1927 in Florence, Italy, Piero Tosi worked as a costume design assistant in a troupe after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1949, Visconti rehearsed Shakespeare's play Troy Ross and Crisida in Florence, and the stage design was franco Zephyrelli, who later became a major director and died not long ago, and it was he who invited Tosy to be his assistant and made him acquainted with Visconti. Toshi's costumes for the show were so satisfying to the director that he was soon invited to design costumes for Visconti's new film Little Beauty, which opened the way to the screen.

In 1963, Tosi was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume for his exquisite costume in the film Leopard, but lost to the Italian veteran Vittorio Nino Novarese, who was twenty years older than him, for Cleopatra. In the 1970s, he was nominated for oscars twice for Venice and Ludwig, but lost to the Russian court films Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and The Sting (1973). In 1980, his modern costume for the French gay comedy La Cage Aux Folles (1978) won the Oscar jury again, but lost out to the stage costume in the song and dance film All That Jazz (1979). In 1983, Tosi hit the Oscars for the fifth time with La Traviata (1983), eventually losing out to the epic blockbuster Gandhi.

On November 16, 2013, at the age of 86, he finally won an Oscar for a little golden man , the Lifetime Achievement Award, but unfortunately, due to his advanced age, he could not fly to the Los Angeles awards site, so he had to entrust the Italian actress Claudia Cardinale, who had worked with him more than a dozen times, to take over the little golden man for him. Ann Roth ( The British Patient ) , a famous American film costume designer who presented the award, praised Tosi as "the greatest film costume design in the world", and Tosi became the first costume designer in film history to win the Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tosi's design is original and historical. When he first designed costumes for "Leopard", which is set in Italy in 1860, he specially found some centuries-old cloth to make several dresses for the heroine Claudia Cardina in order to seek a sense of the times. In this regard, he once said: "The actor's costume must reflect the characters wearing these costumes themselves, but also reflect their lives." Therefore, understanding the historical background of films and studying related traditions is especially important for those of us who make film costumes. ”
