It is distributed in North America, Eurasia and northern and south-central Africa, Central America, South America, and the southeast coastal areas of China, and breeds in East China, South China, Northwest China and Northeast China, wintering in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, southeast tibet and the coast south of 32° north latitude.
It mainly inhabits riverbank beaches and swampy meadows, and feeds on worms, insects, mollusks, plant seeds, plant fragments, etc. The body length is about 16 cm. The upper body is light brown, and the lower body is pure white. The male has black spots on the top of the head, tan on the back of the head and back of the pillow, white forehead and white eyebrow lines, black over the eyeliner, large black spots on both sides of the chest, and gray-black beak and feet. It has white upper wing striations when flying, and the outer white of the tail feathers is obvious. Females have gray-brown patches on the top of their heads , eyeliner , and forethia.
The breeding period is from April to July, and it often nests on the beach or pebble beach, laying 3-5 eggs per nest and hatching for 24-30 days.
