Beiting Lane and Chengxian Street are two ordinary streets in Nanjing, the street surface is not wide, the traffic is congested, there are many shops on both sides, and more catering businesses are bustling and lively. I have studied, worked and lived in this area for many years, and although I have been gone for many years, some places are still fresh in my memory.
Beiting Lane starts from Zhongshan East Road in the south and ends at Zhujiang Road in the north. The Quyuan Restaurant at the mouth of the lane is the most famous Hunan restaurant in Nanjing, and its famous dishes Dong'an chicken and watercress fish are the most loved. In the early 70s, it didn't seem to be very expensive, a few dimes can fry a dish, freshwater fish was rare in those years, and each family could buy a frozen silver carp with a ticket for the New Year (now I don't want it for you either). Watercress fish can only be made of pomfret, half a fish for 6 cents, the taste is still good, every time you go must order, the three brothers can eat a full meal for 3 or 4 yuan. Quyuan Restaurant opposite is some years of hot spring bath, when most of the people did not have bathing facilities, bathing are into the bathhouse, so often have to queue, the New Year is even more crowded, the waiter constantly throws towels, greeting, urging the bathers to leave quickly, let the long queue of people down the pool. Next door to the hot spring is the alma mater, The Ninth High School, where you have studied from junior high school to high school, leaving behind the footprints and memories of your teenage years.
Across Changjiang Road, to the east is 26 Middle School, and to the west is the wall of the Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum. Every Golden Autumn Festival, the fragrance of the osmanthus trees in the art museum fills the 100-meter-wide neighborhood, and we can smell it in the classroom. Next to there are two snack bars, one is called "Yuntaki" cold drink sweets, Taiwanese people open, the store is not large, and the general snack bar that kind of oil-stained twist shop compared to the layout is quite neat and elegant, glass countertops, its sweets such as red bean Lantern, osmanthus wine brewing, etc. are two or two grain tickets nine cents a bowl (four xi tang round corner), sweet and smooth, delicious, affordable, we refer to it as "two nine", speaking of eating "two nine", nine people understand. The other is a snack shop called "Industrious", when the street set up a large pan, selling raw fried vegetable packets, there are green vegetable vermicelli, there are also dried leeks, home from school, often smell the incense to stop, can't help but buy a few to fill the stomach. Further ahead, there is the Nangong (now Dongda) dormitory Taishan Fang, a distinctive Republic of China building, the outer wall is made of imported fireproof bricks, during the Cultural Revolution, Professor Li Jianchen, the father of Watercolor painting in China, was trapped here. There is also a barber shop called "Zhijiang", Zhijiang is one of the surrender sites of the Japanese devils, presumably opened after the victory of the War of Resistance, right? Opposite is cage lane, there was a townhouse in the Republic of China period - Banqiao New Village, many professors of Nanda and Dongda once lived here, and now they have long been demolished and no longer seen! Only the two villas of the Zhu family in the south became part of what is now 1912. The magnolia tree pavilion at the mouth of the cage lane is like a cover, evergreen in all seasons, and a bowl of large white flowers blooms in spring, which is an ancient tree in Nanjing.
At the mouth of General Yang's Lane, there is the Nanjing Tobacco Factory (formerly known as Qinfeng Tobacco Factory) and the Guanshengyuan Food Factory, and the air is mixed with the smell of tobacco and food spices for many years. During the Cultural Revolution, some middle school students × went to the food factory to grab biscuits, which caused a bloody case and became famous. A few boxes of biscuits actually ruined a fresh and young life. Passing by so far, I can't help but think back to the bloody scene - the jeep water tank was broken, the biscuits were spilled on the ground, the blood on the road was stained, and I often sighed, this kind of "revolution" is really harmful!
A few steps ahead, there is the "Guanghua Photo Studio", the lobby with black terrazzo floor, and it is said that the old photographer was the royal photographer of the year, and the photography skills were superb. Visiting the Presidential Palace, I saw a classic huge group photo of dignitaries and dignitaries, which is indeed the work of Guanghua Photo Gallery, which can be seen that the transmission is not false. In front of the garden, there is a famous doctor Ren Shengsan's clinic, a small blue-gray Western-style courtyard.
The pontoon bridge is an old bridge of the Republic of China period, and the railing on the bridge has a typical cloud-patterned stone pillar, where the Wuyang Trench and the Pearl River converge. There is the QuanfuLou Hotel at the head of the bridge, and the small steamed buns of that year can be called a must in Nanjing, with a thin skin and a lot of brine, which is incomparably delicious. I went to taste it several times, but the taste was not as good as before. Opposite Quanfu Building, there is a Jinjia beef shop, operated by Muslims, a cup of tea, a piece of roast cake sandwiched with Jinjia's dried cut beef, economical, cheap and good.
At the end of the Beiting Alley, there are watch shops, stationery shops, pharmacies, and a large tea shop, the cabinets are filled with large tin cans, and every time you pass by, you often smell the aroma of tea, especially jasmine tea and tortoiseshell flowers, which is refreshing to the lungs. The "Hongtai" food store in the alley was relatively large in that year.
Across Zhujiang Road is Chengxian Street, the intersection of the current location of the Pearl Hotel, successively coal-based shops, fruit shops, bookstores, barber shops. This is a famous cultural street, with southeast university, the original site of Nanjing Library, and the former residence of professor Yang Tingbao, a famous architect. The Nanjing Municipal Education Bureau is also in Chengxian Street, where Mr. Lu Xun is said to have worked. A small courtyard with a small pond inside, but a dozen signs of organs hanging at the door, I don't know how to accommodate these many organs, maybe the state organs at that time were not as bloated as they are now? The original site of the Nanjing Library, of course, can not be compared with the current new library, but it was an ideal reading place at that time.
At the mouth of the big yarn hat alley is the "Su Kitchen" brine restaurant, its dongpo meat is crisp but not scattered, fat but not greasy, bright color, melting in the mouth, fragrant teeth and cheeks, my favorite. Roast duck brine duck is a white-haired old man surnamed Wang surnamed Wang after the 80s, especially the roast duck roast goose, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the skin is crisp but not burnt, and the meat is tender but not raw. Summer lazy to cook, chop a bowl, drink a beer, really happy life. There is also a tiger stove at the entrance of the alley, and nearby residents often go to open the water with chips. The sauce garden next door to Su Kitchen is closely related to the lives of residents. At that time, ordinary people did not cook at night, and two "lotus leaf plates" (pickles are wrapped in lotus leaves) at the sauce garden were the dinner dishes of the whole family.
No. 49 Chengxian Street is worth mentioning, which is a large courtyard with dozens of families living in seven vertical and eight horizontal lines, which is rare in the city. I estimate that it was originally a courtyard of a large family, and then successively built houses in the courtyard, and there is a garage at the mouth of Shuangjing Lane on the left side of the courtyard gate, which shows that some of them have come. Chengxian Street has several Western-style lanes in the Republic of China period, such as "Changkangli", "Chengxianli", "Chengxian Village", etc., strangely these Western-style buildings, not only the corridors are narrow and dim, but also do not build toilets, not to mention ordinary bungalows, so every morning residents pour toilets, and the long queues of public toilets at the head of the bridge become a big landscape. There is also a very famous barber shop , "Central BarberShop", a small barber surnamed Ding is highly skilled. Next to it is the "Daming" food store, a food mecca that children yearn for.
Buying rice and oil at the Shatangyuan Grain Station, the director of the grain station, Song Station, is not very old, has gray hair, and is a good person.
The northern section is close to Jiming Temple, which is the wall of Southeast University and several Western-style garden houses.
