According to Xu Genming, Yu Yiting's parents are from Quzhou, and she was born and raised in Zhenhai. When she reached the age of elementary school, she heard that Zhenhai Central Primary School recruited swimming students, and Yu Yiting began to practice swimming in order to attend the primary school of her choice. Later, he was recruited by coach Wang Bowei to join the Zhenhai District Swimming Team.

In 2013, Wang Bowei recommended her to her teacher Xu Genming, and since then Yu Yiting has trained in the Ningbo swimming team. "When Yu Yiting first came to me to learn to swim, her physical condition was average, her grades were mediocre, and she was unremarkable. But the progress is very fast, it can be described as rapid. It took only two or three months to catch up with teammates of the same age, and seven or eight months later to surpass teammates. Xu Genming said, "Yu Yiting's biggest advantage is that she has a strong ability to accept and can quickly understand the coach's intentions; at the same time, she trains hard and never is lazy." At that time, Yu Yiting's family lived in Zhenhai, and her parents sent her to the Yinzhou training site every day after school at 3 p.m. to train, and after arriving home at eight or nine o'clock in the evening, she had to study, which was very hard. But Yu Yiting had never cried bitterly and tired.

In 2015, Yu Yiting, who was only 10 years old, was recommended by Xu Genming to train in the second team of the Zhejiang swimming team. Xu Genming told Yu Yiting's parents that Yu Yiting was very promising, but she was still young and needed the company of her parents and could not throw her away. Yu Yiting's parents followed Xu Genming's advice, sold the house in Zhenhai, closed the original small shop, and the family moved to Hangzhou to rent a house near the training ground. "The growth of athletes is not only the dedication of themselves and their coaches, but also the full support of their families." Xu Genming said.

Yu Yiting quickly came to prominence after training in the provincial team. In October 2020, Yu Yiting was selected for the national team. In May this year, Yu Yiting twice broke the world youth record in the women's 200m individual medley at the 2021 National Swimming Championships and Tokyo Olympic Trials.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Yu Yiting will compete in the women's 200m medley and 400m medley. At present, Yu Yiting's personal best in the 200-meter medley ranks sixth in the world swimming rankings.
