Within 60 hours, contestants will search for bird tracks throughout Jinxiu and submit bird records on the app, and the winner with the most bird species records wins. "We're going to be here until dawn." At about 5:00 a.m. on October 21, Dai Qihong, a college student from Anhui Province, and two other team members had arrived at the gate of Jinxiu Yinshan Forest Park. According to the results of the lottery, a group of 3 people, accompanied by a local guide, had to set foot on 8 bird watching routes in Dayao Mountain within 60 hours, upload and record the birds observed through the mobile app.

Rainy days bring great obstacles to bird watching competitions. But hearing and recognizing birds is also a skill for birdwatchers. As soon as they entered the park, the team followed the birds to the edge of the stream, and sure enough, a large gray bird was foraging along the current, which was a gray-backed swallowtail. In 3 hours, Dai Qihong and his teammates recorded more than a dozen species of birds.

The reporter went all the way and met several groups of team members who participated in the competition, who looked through the telescope and hoped to find the traces of birds at the first time.

At a bend, Team member Xu Lei suddenly rushed out of the car and pointed a camera at a creek on the side of the road. It turned out that a red-tailed water parrot (qú) was standing on a stone in the water.

"Just near the hotel, we have found more than 20 species of birds." Xu Lei told reporters that on the day of the competition registration, she heard different bird calls at the station, and immediately felt the rich variety of birds in Jinxiu.

In a farmland less than a kilometer from the county seat of Jinxiu County, Guo Dandan, a team member from Zhengzhou, found several birds fighting: "This is the red-billed blue magpie and the capuchin, which is a common bird in Jinxiu. ”

Suddenly, one of the team members shouted, "There are birds of prey!" Everyone ran to where she was, and in the direction of the team's finger, a group of large birds circled on the top of the mountain in front of them on the left. At first there were five or six of them, and as a gust of wind blew through, more and more large birds flew out of the woods, and the black pressure was very spectacular, and there were hundreds of them by eye.

After repeated confirmations, Guo Dandan told reporters that this is a group of black-crowned juan falcons (sǔn), which like to flock and migrate with the help of air currents. "We have this bird there too, but I've never seen such a big flock of birds, it's spectacular," she said. ”

At about 3 p.m. that day, the real-time observation progress in the background of the App showed that the contestants had submitted 140 species of birds. Over the next few days, the players will continue to play to the strengths of the different teams and gain a wider record of bird species.

The purpose of bird watching is to protect birds

The reporter learned from the Forestry Bureau of the Autonomous Region that there are 23 orders and 92 families of birds in Guangxi, and the number exceeds 740 species, ranking third in the country. Migratory birds enter Guangxi from mid-February to early April and from the end of September to mid-November every year through the coastal areas of Beibu Bay, liuzhou, hechi, Baise and other northern regions, and the three major migration passages along the Yuecheng Ridge and Ocean Mountain in the direction of Guilin.

Huang Chengming, president of the Guangxi Wildlife Conservation Association, introduced that the Golden Show, where the bird watching competition was held, was the main area in the migration channel of migratory birds in Guangxi. In this competition, more than 40 people from 13 teams from Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and other provinces (autonomous regions) and Local Guangxi participated. The bird distribution data collected during the competition is equivalent to a rapid and concentrated local bird survey, which will accumulate enough valuable information on wild bird resources.

"Millions of migratory birds overwinter and breed in our place every year." The relevant person in charge of Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County said that there are 287 species of local birds, mainly migratory birds, and in the months before and after the frost fall every year, the birds in the forest are endless, many of which are precious species.

Jinxiu Dayao Mountain is also one of the origins of modern Chinese ornithology research, as early as the 1920s, Professor Ren Guorong of Sun Yat-sen University began to conduct resource surveys on the animals of Dayao Mountain, and conducted systematic research on the classification of birds of the Thrush family. One of the most famous is the amount of sparrowhawk (méi), which is the first new bird species discovered and published Chinese, which is a milestone in the history of bird research in China.

During the bird watching competition, birdwatchers and volunteers will carry out activities such as patrol monitoring, rescue and dismantling of illegal hunting tools in key areas such as migratory bird migration routes, resting places, wintering grounds, and other key areas, as well as lakes, ponds, woods, farmland and other activities to protect the smooth migration of migratory birds.
