FiS reported on January 25 that the Peruvian Ministry of Production has temporarily closed fishing operations for Engraulis ringens and Anchoa nasus in north-central Peru.
The moratorium ranges between 10°00'-10°30' S along the Huarmey coast, 11°30'-12°00' S between Chancay and Callao, and 5-20 miles from shore to sea. Small and large artisanal fishing vessels are prohibited during the closure period to protect juvenile anchovies in the area.
The Peruvian Institute of Oceanography (IMARPE) will be responsible for monitoring the closure period, tracking the ecology of anchovies in the exclusion zone and recommending an end time for the closure.
