Foreword: Today let's talk about the "big head baby" in the spade armor, which is the big head thin shovel familiar to many insect friends. The reason why we chose this topic to talk about is mainly because recently we have found that many new insect friends do not have an incorrect understanding of the varieties of large-headed and thin-bodied red shovels.

What is a big head thin body spade?

Misconceptions:
Myth 1: Some people think that the large-headed and thin-bodied spade is only a single variety;
Myth 2: Some people consider each species of large-headed thin-bodied spade to be the same different subspecies.
What is a big head:
The so-called large-headed thin-bodied spade refers to a series of thin-bodied spade species with the same "big head" characteristics, and there are currently about four species (excluding subspecies) that are common, and if you add almost no circulation, you can reach six species. The males of these species are characterized by a particularly large proportion of their heads.

Large-headed varieties:
Common large-headed thin-bodied spades: Solomon's large-headed thin-bodied spade (C. speciosus), New Guinean large-headed thin-bodied spade (C. weinreich), Indonesian large-headed thin-bodied spade (C. pulchellus), Copi thin-body spade (C. kaupi);
Non-mainstream large-headed thin body spade: Margarita slim body spade (C. margarita), C. misimaensis, etc.;
Note: C. margaritae currently does not have a clear Chinese common name, here we directly use the transliteration of the species name "margaritae" to call it, that is: Margarita. C. misimaensis According to information from the Global Biodiversity Information Network, it may have belonged to the Solomon large-headed and thin-bodied spade subspecies.

List of varieties of the large-headed thin-bodied spade series

1. Indonesian large head thin shovel (Cyclommatus pulchellus)
It is found in the mountainous areas of Papua New Guinea at an altitude of 1000 m, with a medium size of about 22.1 to 55.9 mm in males (50.3 mm in feeding records) and 22.2 to 24.6 mm in females.
The large jaw of the Indonesian large-headed red spade male is curved in an overall "く" shape, with 3 large inner teeth at the end, a protruding front eaves at the front of the head, and a bright and reflective mid-end of the elytra. The overall appearance is very similar to Solomon's large-headed thin spade, but this species is smaller and has slightly different tooth shapes.
The Indonesian head is thin and thin and red-
2. New Guinean large-headed thin shovel (Cyclommatus weinreich)
Distributed on the island of New Guinea, it is a small and medium-sized spade with a body length of about 38 to 55 mm (breeding record is 57.4 mm) and a female worm of 20 to 25 mm.
The large jaw of the New Guinean male with a slender body and a spade is very curved, the large inner teeth are long and downward inclined, the leading edge of the head has a large protrusion, and the elytra have a strong gloss. The whole is similar to C. margarita, with only a slight difference in the shape of the large jaw and the head.

3. Cyclommatus kaupi
The Chinese name of the Kaopi thin body spade does not have the word big head, but it also has obvious big head characteristics, because it is usually classified as the big head thin body spade series, and Taiwanese insect friends once called it "the ultimate big head thin body spade".
Mainly distributed in the indonesian java and western new Guinea island, the male insect is eye-catching, the large jaw is inclined from the central position to the anterior median, and is arched, and the middle part of the large jaw has a huge inner tooth, and there are 2 protrusions above, and there are huge protrusions at the front of the head. Overall, it has wild fangs and a unique metallic luster (dark brown in full body color).

4. Cyclommatus margaritae
It is mainly distributed on the island of New Guinea, overlapping with the production area of The Indonesian large-headed thin-bodied spade, with males 25-55 mm long and females 22-25 mm.
Margaret's large-headed, thin-bodied red-shovel male has a very three-dimensional jaw and head, the large jaw is curved more strongly, the large tooth process is located at the proximal end and has a small fork, and the large jaw end has small serrated inner teeth; as the body size increases, the anterior eaves of the head is more developed.

5. Solomon's large head and thin shovel (Cyclommatus speciosus)
Mainly distributed in the Solomon Islands, solomon's large-headed, slender spade currently has two subspecies: the original subspecies and the C. speciosus anepsius subspecies (hereinafter referred to as the A subspecies).
Former subspecies: Bougainville Island (belonging to Papua New Guinea), the largest island in the Solomon Islands, is reddish copper overall, slightly smaller than other subspecies, has a weaker inflexion of the large jaw, and has no obvious gloss on the elytra. It is difficult to obtain due to the relationship between the origins, and there is little circulation in the market.
Subspecies A: Distributed in The Solomon Islands of Mareta, Maquila and other areas, the wild record is about 59 mm (breeding record 64.2 mm). The male's jaw is thick and thick, with 2 internal teeth protruding downwards below the base, and two large inner teeth on the end, with a high cornice like a crab shovel, and a strong metallic luster throughout the elytra.
Note: Subspecies A also has individuals distributed in the Solomon Islands of Vella Lavella, the origin of the male insect base teeth are larger, large individual characteristics are particularly obvious, there are rumors that the origin of the individual will be published as a new subspecies, the current domestic circulation of some insect friends also treat it as a subspecies. However, from the data we searched, it is not certain that the individuals on the island of Vilamoura have been upgraded to new subspecies.

Postscript: I believe that after reading it, you should have a clear understanding of the big head and thin body and the red shovel! At present, the circulation rate of Solomon's large head and thin body shovel in the domestic market is relatively high.
If there is any error above, I hope that all the insect friends will correct it, thank you for reading!
