Recently, stranded sperm whales were found in the waters of Changxing Island in Dalian, which is the first time on record that sperm whales have appeared in the waters of the Bohai Sea. Identified by marine biologists, it is an adult male sperm whale. The whale is about 18 meters long and weighs close to about 40 tons when salvaged ashore. Sperm whales are Classified As Class I of Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), fishing is prohibited, and stranded sperm whales are rare.

After the sperm whale was salvaged ashore, the Dalian Public Cultural Service Center invited Dr. Sui Hongjin, director of the Anatomy Department of Dalian Medical University and founder of the Mystery of Life Museum, to check its status.
According to Sui Hongjin, "The reason why this sperm whale appears in the Bohai Sea sea must be to track food, which shows that marine governance has achieved remarkable results in recent years, and marine biodiversity and marine environment have been improved." Regarding the cause of death, Sui Hongjin said, "There are many factors in the death of the sperm whale, and at present, there are no obvious wounds on the outside of this whale, so it is difficult to judge." ”
What is the value of a dead whale? In this regard, Sui Hongjin said that a dead whale has high scientific research value, which can be used for the exploration of marine science and biological science, and can also be used for exhibition display. Whale stranding in offshore waters and people often hear that "a whale falls, all things live" is completely different, "a whale falls, all things live" refers to when the whale dies in the sea, its body will sink into the seabed, and then decompose into an ecological circulation system that can provide for the growth of all things for nearly a hundred years, but this can be formed in the deep sea area, if in the offshore, a whale weighing dozens of tons will cause biological pollution in the coastal waters, so for environmental protection considerations, it must be disposed of immediately. "The death of the whale makes us feel sorry, but by chance it stranded in the waters of Dalian, it should be said that this is a gift from nature to Dalian." Sperm whales are a precious marine resource, and preserving them is of great significance for us to understand the ocean, understand this mysterious deep-sea monster, and popularize marine science and biological knowledge. There are already mature biotechnologies and mature cases where we can bioplasticize it to present a sperm whale to the public in its entirety and give people a closer look at marine life. Sui Hongjin said.
It is reported that after the research of the relevant departments of Dalian City, the stranded sperm whale will remain in Dalian for scientific research and exhibition display. At present, the Dalian Public Cultural Service Center has transported the sperm whale to a professional biotechnology institution for emergency disposal, and the next step will be to apply for a collection permit from the relevant state departments in accordance with the relevant regulations and procedures for wildlife protection, and at the same time carry out marine scientific research around it, planning to make plastic specimens and display them publicly at the Dalian Natural History Museum for popularizing marine knowledge and publicizing marine culture.
