Jim Jarmusch
Jim Jarmusch
(1952.1.22 ~)
American actor, director and playwright
Videographer, producer
People don't have a relationship in life
Why is it necessary for a film or a novel to be
Jim Jarmusch is unique for his unruliness and weirdness
Praised as "the grandmaster of American independent cinema"
Jarmusch with snow-white dandelion-style hair
It is always a "stingy" look
The indifferent and autistic look seemed to mark him
He is often in a state of self-sufficient mental flight
He flew like a roc spreading his wings at an altitude of 10,000 meters
He didn't bother to deal with anything in the world
Jim Jarmusch first came into contact with images as a literary background
He was deeply influenced by the Beat writers
Since his student days, Jarmusch has been somewhat rebellious
In the middle and late stages, works also began to incorporate a large number of commercial elements
The original gesture of deliberately not pleasing the audience is no longer obvious
The pursuit of poetry and symbolism
Maintaining a persistent attention to detail is where its style lies
Creatively, he had no long-term plans
After that, it is difficult to judge how to develop
Jarmusch's works are mostly characteristic of road films
The film that implies Jarmusch is still unfinished
In terms of style
He is still not an author who has matured to the point of losing possibility
Jarmusch's uniqueness
It lies in his ability to shoot low-cost productions with a special charm
Images of indifference and alienation, wandering complexes

It's important to keep each other focused on something new
There are many areas where I can learn
Although it is all shallow, it is not a bad thing
Life is not as long as you think
I don't want to waste my time just learning one thing
I'm just a bitch, I don't care, I don't deliberately gain anything
Every movie is a few years in my life
And now those days are gone after the film is finished
Forever becomes history, so once in this situation
I had to leave
It's over anyway, and I can't change anything anymore
I won't learn anything more, and I won't be able to enjoy it
So what else is there to look back on?
There is beauty in the film itself, and the beauty is that it has its own rhythm
It will allow the viewer to follow this rhythm while watching
But I'm a producer of movies
It's completely impossible to follow your own movie
So if I still go to see my own movies at this point
It is equivalent to taking this beauty from the hands of others
Like Hitchcock, there is no room for external pressure to interfere with the story
Each shot is pre-planned,
But he himself said that filming was boring to death
Because I already know what I'm going to do
I did the opposite
Something I can't control will become part of the movie
I only remember the chores during the shoot
Like what people say
Or what we did when we weren't shooting
But if it comes to the movie itself, I never think much about it
This memory was also deleted by myself
I regret that I am a lazy workaholic
I tend to be lazy a little bit, that's all
Ideas come into being
Over time I would complain about not taking more of my work
My own philosophical creed is:
Never look back, and don't let the past get your emotions tied up
My ambition is to create, and it is deduced in my own way
Creation comes first, making what I believe in film and music
You don't have to worry about what others say
Feel more yourself, and then produce more results, there are in and out
Anyway, play movies, play music and other things
I do always love to make things cold
I admit I resist something that is too mainstream and too commercial
A film, a song, or other artistic creation
Allows the author to express his thoughts
And leave permanent fantasy space for others
That's called bullshit!

Born January 22 in Ohio, USA
His father was from Eastern Europe and his mother was of Iranian descent
Mixed blood and crossed cultures
This puts Jarmuschon under the heavy pressure of complexity
He later loved poetry, music and movies
It's all about trying to escape from this complex tool and means
So we see one by one in a complex mesh
Spooky elves seeking escape
Jarmusch's father was a film critic for a film magazine
When he was a child, Jarmusch watched a lot of movies
But the film did not arouse his full interest at this time
Jarmusch's first wish was to become a poet

Jarmusch graduated from high school
He participated in an American-French student exchange program
So came to Paris, according to the plan
He will spend a summer here
But Paris is full of culture and art
Jarmusch was fascinated
His return date has been repeatedly postponed
So much so that he stayed for a whole year
During this time, Jarmusch frantically stilted lessons
He spends most of his time
In the French cinema the que
Immerse yourself in images that are very different from what you see in your hometown
Total disregard for the outside world
Fortunately, France at this time
It was the period when New Wave cinema was booming
Truffaut, Chabrol, Godard and so on
The representative figures of the New Wave are in a period of creative exuberance
New works are emerging, and Jarmusch is deep in Paris
Naturally, it is also very beneficial to these predecessors

At the age of 17, Jarmusch returned to the United States
He was admitted to Columbia University to major in English literature
After graduation, he successfully obtained a degree in English literature
However, Jarmusch's love for movies has not diminished
It's just that he has no filmmaking experience at all
Therefore, Jarmusch applied for entry
Attended New York University's Tisch School of Film Arts
This choice proved to be extremely strategic
Jarmusch soon became a legendary director
Nicholas Ray's teaching assistant
Ray admired his disciple
He began to help Jarmusch write the screenplay wholeheartedly
And traveled around to raise funds for it
And the famous German director at that time
Wim Wenders
A film is being made paying tribute to Nicholas Ray
Water-surpassing light
Lightning Over Water
Ray and Wenders during the shooting of Lightning Over Water (1980)
Nicholas Ray took the opportunity to take this
The talented student was introduced to Wenders
The two saw each other as they were
Jarmusch soon became a production assistant for Wenders' films
Although Rayne died of cancer in June 1979
But his cultivation of Jamush before his death had borne fruit
It was with the help of the money provided by Ray
Jarmusch's first feature film is a long holiday
It was quickly completed in 1980

Self-directed and independently produced editing
The long holiday is long
Permanent Vacation
As an anti-Hollywood-style independent director
Jarmusch doesn't want to carry the burden of a calm narrative
This tendency to "take the light and fear the heavy" has always been reflected in his films
Simple plot, rudimentary interior arrangements, plain shots and editing
Carl Theodore Dreyer said:
If you remove the excess things in the house
The rest often reflect the personality of the owner of the house
Jacques Levitte said:
I love taking pictures of the city's streets in Paris
But not the gorgeous and luxurious scenes that are commonly used in many movies
It's the places that don't get the public's attention
The film is Jarmusch's debut novel, based in New York
Borrow the walk of the characters, wandering from street to street
Then finally leave by boat, with a flat, perspective, frame
As well as a rich sense of layering, the movement of the space is expressed
There is no shortage of such spatial transfers in his later works
The film cost him a total of $15,000
After the film was released, it was widely praised by critics
The long holiday comic is widely acclaimed in the film industry
But NYU professors don't buy it
So much so that Jarmusch has so far
Still not getting a degree from New York University
At this point, the production of Water Return light is complete
The successful collaboration deepened the friendship between Jarmusch and Wenders
So much so that Jarmusch left the film after Wenders finished filming
Intercepted to complete a 30-minute short film New World

After a while in the movie circle
Jarmusch met German filmmaker Otto Grokenberger
The latter taught him a new approach to artistic manipulation
This led to the extremely exciting film that followed, Heaven Stranger
Jarmusch begins with a New World
Completed his second feature film
Strange Shadows in Heaven
Stranger Than Paradise
Semi-neorealist black humor, the biggest feature of this film is
Each scene consists of a shot
The middle is cut off by a brief black screen and connected
People who are obsessed by the rapidly splicing MTV-style over-visual stimulation
Here the charm of "gaze" and "slowness" is rediscovered
Jarmusch also became famous with this film in one fell swoop, clean and neat
Won the National Film Critics Association of the Year Award
Golden Panther Award at the San Locarno Film Festival and
Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival (i.e. Best Debut)
The film has also become a passport for Jarmusch to enter the international film world
Film critics noticed Jarmusch in the work

Some even took him with Bresson and Yasujiro Ozu

"Strangers in Paradise" is followed
Comedy "Outlaws" and long idle "Coffee and Smoke"
The maverick Jarmusch has attracted many fallacious film critics
With snow dandelion hair, Jarmusch still has a "stingy" look
Those "film industry knowers" have been shelved here lukewarmly
Speaking of the movie Jarmusch thinks
I'm not really a director, like Spielberg's class
I just make films to travel and work with friends
Directed the film
Outlaws
Down by Law
The protagonists of the story are three prisoners who have escaped from prison
In Jarmusch's films
All the protagonists are people who have escaped from fate
But this escape is not out of resistance
It's more like the instinct to go with the flow
In the end, they will all face the emptiness of fate
The film still uses black-and-white images
It is still a simple to almost dry structure and layout
The story unfolds suddenly and ends abruptly
It's like a life without boundaries and endings
Music by John Lurie, song by Tom Waits
These are the names of the two production crews that appear in the opening credits
It is also the two protagonists in this film
The other is Italian actor Roberto Benigni
Two musicians, a master of comedy
Around the theme of "prison escape", there are various hilarious sparks
The first half depicts the story of a small space in a prison
The second half is a movement in the natural framing of the swampy jungle
However, both indoors and outdoors
Jarmusch can always find those breathtakingly beautiful perspectives
Outlaws were nominated for the Palme d'Or
Outlaws after the release
A French newspaper commented on Jarmusch as follows:
Jarmusch is 33 years old
Just like the age at which Christ was crucified
We only hope that his films will be born again like Christ

Jarmusch still insisted
Deal with people, events, and relationships in weird ways
In the usual film, the story hooks up with the story
The plot changes the characters, and adventures bring destiny
Acquaintance creates love...
And here in Jarmusch, encounters are nothing more than passing by
After the encounter, it is still a strange road
His role never expected to change from others
The plot and story are still rooted in alienation and loneliness
Life is too short

Night on Earth
The film consists of five that take place at the same time
Small stories of different countries and regions are composed
Each story is described
A short encounter between a taxi driver and a passenger
Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, Helsinki
All five stories were filmed in a taxi
Vivid lines avoid the dullness of monotonous scenes
Winona Red Tomboy looks unexpectedly handsome and cute
Bernini's words nagging skills opened to maximum
The ending is laughable
Jarmusch couldn't do without cars and street corners
Just like Tarantino can't do without restaurants and bars
Jarmusch's works seem to be stories that are constantly being derived
The first draft of his script also had only a vague concept of the story
True shapes and modifications are made only when shooting
The filming process is constantly changing, even in post-production
New ideas and motivations can lead to major changes in the structure
Jarmusch cherishes the mistakes and accidents that occurred during the filming
He thinks it rains when it rains
An unexpected mistake will make it wrong
He said, "There are people like Hitchcock
Each shot is pre-planned, and I do the opposite
He likes the highly operational form of film
A variety of actors come from all directions, bringing different acting methods
People of all colors are frantically going their own way, huddled together
Jarmusch restored the camera he had in his hands to a fountain pen
Apply it by hand and do it spontaneously
Jarmusch's films are full of this freedom and brilliance of "writing."
Jarmusch agreed with the poet Williams' suggestion
Poetry should be listened to with rough ears
Jarmusch's weirdness and casualness constitute the meaning of his work
The uninhibited and unbridled structure of the film gives the film more room for interpretation
Thus his films have a poetic quality
With the help of audiovisual language, Jarmusch leads people to the realm of imagination
Sounds, pictures are Jarmusch's hope that people will "forget the fish?" " language tool
Some say that watching a film feels more akin to reading a novel
This also illustrates Jarmusch's films in another way
It has a certain condensed pure quality
The film was self-written, self-directed and self-made by Jarmusch
He finished writing the script in about eight days
The location of each story depends on the actor he wants to work with
The soundtrack comes from his old partner, master folk musician Tom Waits
After becoming famous, Jarmusch did not feel at ease with his job
He formed a band called Del-Byzanteens
He is also the lead singer and keyboardist of the orchestra, and toured extensively
He also released an album
Lie for a living
Lies To Live By

Verses from the poet William Bullock ring out in front of the slow camera

William Bullock's verses borrow the souls of the characters in the film
We borrowed Jarmusch's images to become poets
In essence, maybe we and God are the ridiculous "nobody" in the film.
Our whole lives are nothing more than a mirror in the water led by "no one"

Until the end of the story, the protagonist stands at a lost crossroads
There was no one around, like his bleak life in the evening
Soothing long shots, flashbacks of dream fragments
Delicate use of color and music
These are all excellent highlights in this film
The Broken Flower was nominated at the 58th Cannes Film Festival
And won the Grand Jury Prize
Jarmusch once said that he hated nostalgia
However, this work begins a retrospective journey
The protagonist, like Buster Keaton, is paralyzed and expressionless

Jim Jarmusch has always insisted on making independent films
There are also many followers in the world of time films

The symbolism of Jarmusch's work
Jarmusch's works all implicitly express the barriers to human communication, and he likes to describe the estrangement and mutual influence of people who have formed a stubborn sense of self after encountering each other. Philosophically, Jarmusch never pays attention to exclusivity at the level of worldview, although in his stories people with a strong sense of individuality either have difficulty in sharing ideas or simply lack the need to communicate. More often, mere communication leads to misunderstandings. In short, the characters in Jarmusch's films can never really understand each other, they never expect each other, so all actions can become surprises.
Compared to some films with similar themes, from "Rashomon" and "Tower of Babel" to "Crash", Jarmusch rarely guides the facts in his own work, and he is not responsible for telling the audience that it contains embarrassment or regret, or anything else. He shows the fact that different entities, such as individuals, nations, and civilizations, despite their curiosity and tendency to communicate with each other, cannot be fundamentally integrated.
If you look at it from another angle, it can also be said that Jarmusch does not allow his characters to achieve self-transcendence. For the former category of diehards, Jarmusch does not need them to have a motive to surpass themselves. From the perspective of the people in the play, it is portrayed that some characters are unwilling to change their worldview, or choose a stage where they do not want to transform their worldview, so as to avoid excessive drama. For another type of active character, Jarmusch also tried to describe the people's hyperinflation of curiosity as another kind of stubbornness, and never let their efforts show the possibility of self-salvation. When they understand people and things that they don't understand, they become like them.
In addition, Jamush's films often turn the influence of individuals on civilization into allegories. In Jarmusch's films, once an encounter occurs, the party in the later stages of the trajectory of civilizational development is tired of its environment, but does not think much of other ways of civilization. They prefer to look for a moment of quickness, maintaining a well-intentioned indifference with others. The first thing all outsiders who come to the United States is that the United States is full of novelties but comes with violence and conflicts of interest. In Stranger Things, Willie warns Eva not to go to unfamiliar places because they are synonymous with danger. As for the rest of the trip, Willie and Eddie themselves would not have imagined that they would suddenly visit Eva in Cleveland. In "The Stranger", Blake comes to the western pioneering town of the American spiritual symbol and spends a lot of shots describing the evil deeds in the town. After saving Blake, No Body mistakenly believes that he saved the poet of the same name whom he once worshipped, and Blake is confused by the world that No Body describes that is originally real. Johnston in Broken Flowers, after returning from a visit to his old lover, suspects that it all stems from a neighbor's prank. Bernini in Outlaws never thinks that the other two inmates really hated each other. What's more, in "Mysterious Train", when the Italian widow feels overwhelmed, she sees the ghost of Elvis in front of her, and her American roommate sees nothing. They didn't really share anything but their feelings of loneliness. These different types of communication disorders have always been an important theme of Jarmusch's performance. The assimilation, death, or passing of outsiders becomes a symbol of arrogance, vanity, and inability to redeem oneself in the face of American self-confidence.
In the Soup
Jarmusch's pursuit of poetry
The poetry in Jarmusch's films differs from the sublimation of romanticized life in Russian poetic films or other poetic film genres. The poetry in Jarmusch's films is reflected in the display of details that are easy to ignore and will never be shown in melodrama, but the transitional bridges in the general drama show a stunning charm here in Jarmusch. Jarmusch never expressed the life of a well-educated, complex social relationship, and greatly enriched material spirit, nor did he emphasize the humble and trivial life of a small person. Further, any simple realism in the mental activity that Jarmusch wishes to exhibit is excluded from consideration.
In most of his films, the characters do not metaphysically summarize their situation. In Ghost Dog Killer we see black ninjas repeating philosophical dogmas from the East, but these seemingly brilliant myths are like Willy's self-interpretation of the American way of life in Heaven' Shadow. The only line that metaphysically distills the subject comes from a misunderstanding of the Indian No body in The Exodus.
The attempted accountant in "The Alien" arrives in the wild land, fed up with embarrassment and cold reception, and finds that his accounting expertise has become useless after being abandoned by the rules of the game in modern society. He encountered the warm pulse of the wind and dust woman, but was broken by the brutality of the local society. When No body confides in him the only attachment to human civilization, Black's poem, the viewer discovers that in Jarmusch's world, what can cause communication beyond civilization is poetry. For the first time, this detail most directly expresses the moral of Jarmusch's work: whether it is sensory stimulation, the development of civilization, the mutual understanding of specific individuals, or even the efforts of reason, it is not helpful for human spiritual communication, and as for warmth or the need to save a moment, it is ultimately spent without a trace. In Jarmusch's view, nothing can be the terminator of the spacer that saves people, only poetry lasts forever. Both the living and the dead, and beyond civilization. "Time and day are different, and poetry provides a moment that makes all people a contemporary of all people." The minimalist style of Jarmusch's work, the anti-climactic structure, and the high attention to detail are all intended to be combined with this poetic (but non-poetic) pursuit.
Jarmusch was influenced by literary music
Jarmusch apparently did not follow the academy-style structural approach, and both the beginning and the turn and the beginning of the development climax were dismantled by Jarmusch. As a feature film, he must follow the rules of screenwriting in parts, but from a macro perspective, he does not show an attempt to create a climax in a feature film.
Jarmusch's narrative style has always maintained a tendency towards small plots. Fragmentary plot, small wavy line rhythm, emotions rise sharply in a small area, turn sharply. In Jarmusch films, it's hard to see the overall narrative being destroyed in pursuit of a laugh point or a lyrical scene. Although there is no classical structure of succession and transition, there is also little idle writing to welcome the audience. Technically, it does not pursue visual stimulation, and mainly focuses on dramatic performances. Perhaps Jarmusch, who majored in literature, knew how to play to his strengths and avoid his weaknesses at the level of audiovisual technology, and he stubbornly did not carve out audiovisual language, so that even if any play was moved from the screen to the stage, it did not need to be modified in details.
Jarmusch's influence on music is also more profound. He often made cameo appearances in films by friends in the music industry, and formed his own band, interspersing other artistic fields. He claims to be inspired by "the spirit of introspection embodied in rock and roll". His musical flavors can also be felt everywhere in his own film scores. Influenced by the double influence of literature and music, he has always maintained a minimalist approach to the narrative of the film and is reluctant to express too much in the same scene. His insistence on exploring the art of narrative can always be seen in his self-written and directed films. Jarmusch's films are full of poetic magnifications of the details. Compared with other independent American contemporaries with independent qualities, Jarmusch seems to be more concerned about his feelings, and he is using images to fulfill his dream of a teenager's unsuccessful poet.
The charm of detail in Jarmusch's films
Jarmusch's films pay great attention to detail in the cold field part, and a large number of cold scene situations have become one of the signature styles of Jarmusch's works. In "Strangers in Paradise", when Eva first arrives at Willie's house in New York, the two have a strong contrast from their outfits to preferences - the cold Eva and the old lady dressed as Willie have almost no common language - and Eva has to accommodate Willie's American life. When Willie slept, Eva leaned alone in front of the TV; when Willie went out, Eva swayed alone to the music; Willie sat alone on the bed frustrated after receiving the call; Eva came to and left Willie's house on the way, walking alone through the streets without any dramatic scenes. These cold shots became the stylized tone of Jarmusch's films in the first film.
When the plot that drives development has been completed or has not yet appeared, Jarmusch used to leave a lot of blank time, sometimes even longer than the plot point itself. In Outlaws, before Bernini's arrival, the relationship between the two inmates rarely uses lines, and the change of position of the two in the room becomes a manifestation of the development of the relationship. The walking and stopping of the characters in "Mysterious Train" occupy a lot of space, which is rarely represented in the melodrama. In "Stranger In Paradise", Willie's room, his aunt's residence, Eva leads the two to see the ice lake, the couple separated by the two in the movie theater, the cold scene effect is natural, Jarmusch completes the situation and no longer does the emphasis on pleasing the audience, and the situation itself becomes the drama.
We hardly see the dilemma in Jarmusch's films. Although cold-field images also have their own causes and effects in their respective contextual relationships, in Jarmusch films, cold scenes have become the norm of character relationships as one of the key points of attention, and they are not only used as the main components of narrative, but also the charm of the minimalist style of Jarmusch films.
