The symbolism of Jarmusch's work

Jarmusch's works all implicitly express the barriers to human communication, and he likes to describe the estrangement and mutual influence of people who have formed a stubborn sense of self after encountering each other. Philosophically, Jarmusch never pays attention to exclusivity at the level of worldview, although in his stories people with a strong sense of individuality either have difficulty in sharing ideas or simply lack the need to communicate. More often, mere communication leads to misunderstandings. In short, the characters in Jarmusch's films can never really understand each other, they never expect each other, so all actions can become surprises.

Compared to some films with similar themes, from "Rashomon" and "Tower of Babel" to "Crash", Jarmusch rarely guides the facts in his own work, and he is not responsible for telling the audience that it contains embarrassment or regret, or anything else. He shows the fact that different entities, such as individuals, nations, and civilizations, despite their curiosity and tendency to communicate with each other, cannot be fundamentally integrated.

If you look at it from another angle, it can also be said that Jarmusch does not allow his characters to achieve self-transcendence. For the former category of diehards, Jarmusch does not need them to have a motive to surpass themselves. From the perspective of the people in the play, it is portrayed that some characters are unwilling to change their worldview, or choose a stage where they do not want to transform their worldview, so as to avoid excessive drama. For another type of active character, Jarmusch also tried to describe the people's hyperinflation of curiosity as another kind of stubbornness, and never let their efforts show the possibility of self-salvation. In addition, Jamush's films often turn the influence of individuals on civilization into allegories. In Jarmusch's films, once an encounter occurs, the party in the later stages of the trajectory of civilizational development is tired of its environment, but does not think much of other ways of civilization. They prefer to look for a moment of quickness, maintaining a well-intentioned indifference with others. The first thing all outsiders who come to the United States is that the United States is full of novelties but comes with violence and conflicts of interest. In Stranger Things, Willie warns Eva not to go to unfamiliar places because they are synonymous with danger. As for the rest of the trip, Willie and Eddie themselves would not have imagined that they would suddenly visit Eva in Cleveland. In "The Stranger", Blake comes to the western pioneering town of the American spiritual symbol and spends a lot of shots describing the evil deeds in the town. After saving Blake, No Body mistakenly believes that he saved the poet of the same name whom he once worshipped, and Blake is confused by the world that No Body describes that is originally real. Johnston in Broken Flowers, after returning from a visit to his old lover, suspects that it all stems from a neighbor's prank. Bernini in Outlaws never thinks that the other two inmates really hated each other. What's more, in "Mysterious Train", when the Italian widow feels overwhelmed, she sees the ghost of Elvis in front of her, and her American roommate sees nothing. They didn't really share anything but their feelings of loneliness. These different types of communication disorders have always been an important theme of Jarmusch's performance. The assimilation, death, or passing of outsiders becomes a symbol of arrogance, vanity, and inability to redeem oneself in the face of American self-confidence.

Jarmusch's pursuit of poetry

The poetry in Jarmusch's films differs from the sublimation of romanticized life in Russian poetic films or other poetic film genres. The poetry in Jarmusch's films is reflected in the display of details that are easy to ignore and will never be shown in melodrama, but the transitional bridges in the general drama show a stunning charm here in Jarmusch. Jarmusch never expressed the life of a well-educated, complex social relationship, and greatly enriched material spirit, nor did he emphasize the humble and trivial life of a small person. Further, any simple realism in the mental activity that Jarmusch wishes to exhibit is excluded from consideration.

In most of his films, the characters do not metaphysically summarize their situation. In Ghost Dog Killer we see black ninjas repeating philosophical dogmas from the East, but these seemingly brilliant myths are like Willy's self-interpretation of the American way of life in Heaven' Shadow. The only line that metaphysically distills the subject comes from a misunderstanding of the Indian No body in The Exodus.

The attempted accountant in "The Alien" arrives in the wild land, fed up with embarrassment and cold reception, and finds that his accounting expertise has become useless after being abandoned by the rules of the game in modern society. He encountered the warm pulse of the wind and dust woman, but was broken by the brutality of the local society. When No body confides in him the only attachment to human civilization, Black's poem, the viewer discovers that in Jarmusch's world, what can cause communication beyond civilization is poetry. For the first time, this detail most directly expresses the moral of Jarmusch's work: whether it is sensory stimulation, the development of civilization, the mutual understanding of specific individuals, or even the efforts of reason, it is not helpful for human spiritual communication, and as for warmth or the need to save a moment, it is ultimately spent without a trace. In Jarmusch's view, nothing can be the terminator of the spacer that saves people, only poetry lasts forever. Both the living and the dead, and beyond civilization. "Time and day are different, and poetry provides a moment that makes all people a contemporary of all people." The minimalist style of Jarmusch's work, the anti-climactic structure, and the high attention to detail are all intended to be combined with this poetic (but non-poetic) pursuit.

Jarmusch was influenced by literary music

Jarmusch apparently did not follow the academy-style structural approach, and both the beginning and the turn and the beginning of the development climax were dismantled by Jarmusch. As a feature film, he must follow the rules of screenwriting in parts, but from a macro perspective, he does not show an attempt to create a climax in a feature film.

Jarmusch's narrative style has always maintained a tendency towards small plots. Fragmentary plot, small wavy line rhythm, emotions rise sharply in a small area, turn sharply. In Jarmusch films, it's hard to see the overall narrative being destroyed in pursuit of a laugh point or a lyrical scene. Although there is no classical structure of succession and transition, there is also little idle writing to welcome the audience. Technically, it does not pursue visual stimulation, and mainly focuses on dramatic performances. Perhaps Jarmusch, who majored in literature, knew how to play to his strengths and avoid his weaknesses at the level of audiovisual technology, and he stubbornly did not carve out audiovisual language, so that even if any play was moved from the screen to the stage, it did not need to be modified in details.

Jarmusch's influence on music is also more profound. He often made cameo appearances in films by friends in the music industry, and formed his own band, interspersing other artistic fields. He claims to be inspired by "the spirit of introspection embodied in rock and roll". His musical flavors can also be felt everywhere in his own film scores. Influenced by the double influence of literature and music, he has always maintained a minimalist approach to the narrative of the film and is reluctant to express too much in the same scene. His insistence on exploring the art of narrative can always be seen in his self-written and directed films. Jarmusch's films are full of poetic magnifications of the details. Compared with other independent American contemporaries with independent qualities, Jarmusch seems to be more concerned about his feelings, and he is using images to fulfill his dream of a teenager's unsuccessful poet.

The charm of detail in Jarmusch's films

Jarmusch's films pay great attention to detail in the cold field part, and a large number of cold scene situations have become one of the signature styles of Jarmusch's works. In "Strangers in Paradise", when Eva first arrives at Willie's house in New York, the two have a strong contrast from their outfits to preferences - the cold Eva and the old lady dressed as Willie have almost no common language - and Eva has to accommodate Willie's American life. When Willie slept, Eva leaned alone in front of the TV; when Willie went out, Eva swayed alone to the music; Willie sat alone on the bed frustrated after receiving the call; Eva came to and left Willie's house on the way, walking alone through the streets without any dramatic scenes. These cold shots became the stylized tone of Jarmusch's films in the first film.

When the plot that drives development has been completed or has not yet appeared, Jarmusch used to leave a lot of blank time, sometimes even longer than the plot point itself. In Outlaws, before Bernini's arrival, the relationship between the two inmates rarely uses lines, and the change of position of the two in the room becomes a manifestation of the development of the relationship. The walking and stopping of the characters in "Mysterious Train" occupy a lot of space, which is rarely represented in the melodrama. In "Stranger In Paradise", Willie's room, his aunt's residence, Eva leads the two to see the ice lake, the couple separated by the two in the movie theater, the cold scene effect is natural, Jarmusch completes the situation and no longer does the emphasis on pleasing the audience, and the situation itself becomes the drama.

We hardly see the dilemma in Jarmusch's films. Although cold-field images also have their own causes and effects in their respective contextual relationships, in Jarmusch films, cold scenes have become the norm of character relationships as one of the key points of attention, and they are not only used as the main components of narrative, but also the charm of the minimalist style of Jarmusch films.
