After more than 3,000 years and hundreds of millions of times of writing practice, Chinese calligraphy has produced a series of constituent elements. There are both material and spiritual elements in these elements; there are technical factors that constitute form, and there are cultural factors that form meaning; there are things that are commonal and there are things that are individual. And those spiritual and individual things often form the unique calligraphy style of the calligrapher.

For example, we are accustomed to the calligraphy of literati and scholars, and we can always find such characteristics as "handsome, elegant and simple" in their calligraphy works; and when we look at the calligraphy of the warriors who gallop on the battlefield, we can feel the stiffness and bravery of the charge from between their pen and ink lines.
For example, the calligraphy of the patriotic general General Chen Mingshu reflects perseverance, courage and arrogance between the lines. Thinking back to that year, the bravery and tenacity of General Chen Mingshu's 19th Route Army in the "Songhu War of Resistance" will always be remembered by future generations. There is a long section of martyrs' road in Guangzhou, and there is a cemetery of the 19th Route Army on the road, which echoes the Huanghuagang Seventy-two Martyrs Cemetery at the southern end. I remember that when I was a child, the martyr road never had a spiritual evil theory, and it was really awe-inspiring.

Today, when we remember General Chen Mingshu, we should cherish the calligraphy and ink marks left by Mr. Chen Mingshu even more, and his legendary life and noble patriotic spirit should be known and remembered by future generations.

Chen Mingshu (1889~1965), also known as Zhenru, was a native of Quzhang, Hepu, Guangdong (now part of Guangxi), a general of the Northern Expedition and a famous anti-Japanese general, and his 19th Route Army was the most important and resolute force in the "Songhu War of Resistance". He served as chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Government, acting president of the Executive Yuan, general of the army, elder of the Iron Fourth Army, one of the founders of the Kuomintang Revolutionary Committee, and a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
