On October 11, an event with the theme of "Protecting Wild Animals, We Are in Action" was held in Yunnan Sun River National Forest Park, and 85 wild animals were released on the spot.
It is understood that the 85 animals released are national first-level protected animals bee monkeys, concave tortoises, national second-level protected animals such as ocelots and white egrets, all of which are rescued by the relevant competent departments of Pu'er City, because they do not have the ability to survive in the wild, and are handed over to the temporary shelter and rescue points of wild animals in Pu'er Sun River Forest Park for breeding and rehabilitation training in the wild.
"Many animals have lost their basic ability to survive in the wild when they are rescued, and some of them have injuries on their bodies, and if they had been released at that time, their chances of survival would have been very small." It must go through many rigorous tests and report to the competent authorities for approval before the conditions will be released, and follow-up observation after release." Workers involved in wildlife rescue said.
According to reports, the temporary wildlife shelter and rescue point in Pu'er Sun River Forest Park was established in March 2016 to carry out wildlife containment and rescue work under the guidance and supervision of the forestry departments of Pu'er City and District. The rescue point is equipped with professional veterinarians and full-time observers, which have rich advantages in wildlife breeding and rescue, and can effectively carry out rescue feeding and rewilding training. As of September 2021, the rescue sites have a total of 652 animals (only) of 61 species. In order to better implement the corporate philosophy of "protecting primary forests and loving wild animals" of Yunnan Mekong Group, the head office, and give back to the society, the rescue point will continue to increase capital investment, improve and build a higher standard of living environment, and make more contributions to animal protection.
According to Miao Zhixuan, head of the temporary wildlife shelter and rescue site in Pu'er Sun River National Forest Park, this release activity is the largest rescue site and involves the largest number and variety of animals. Since the outbreak of the new crown epidemic and the release of the new version of the "List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection", the released species have focused on the ornamental birds mostly cultivated by artificial breeding, such as mynas, parrots, thrushes and other national second-level protected animals, as well as birds of prey snake eagles, grass owls, etc. The release of these animals coincided with the opening of COP15 today, and we hope to do our part to help the conference convene.
It is reported that the total area of Yunnan Sun River National Forest Park is 21623 hectares, the forest coverage rate is 97.45%, and the natural resources are abundant, which can provide a good living environment for released animals.
The release event was hosted by the Pu'er Sun River Forest Park Wildlife Temporary Shelter and Rescue Site, and co-organized by the Simao District Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the Pu'er National Park Administration, and the Simao District Market Supervision and Administration Bureau.
