This was my first contact with the work of director Kore-eda, and the Sea Street Diary tells the story of the three sisters who met their father and the daughter of the object of the affair because of their father's funeral, that is, their half-sister, and the story of the four of them living together.
The story focuses on the interaction of the four sisters, and the four seemingly independent story lines are actually interlinked with each other, and gather at the end, symbolizing that the four sisters are the same family.
Compared with the second sister and the third sister, the elder sister spent the longest time with her father, when the father left them after the affair, the mother also remarried and abandoned them every other year, and the 14- and 15-year-old sister took on the responsibility of taking care of the two sisters, which also made her feel disappointed and angry with her parents.
If you look at the time spent with her father, her sister Xiaoling and Yuki sister have been with their father for about 15 years, and Xiaoling misses her father, but at the same time understands that her father has broken up another family because of her affair, and she is very guilty about it.
The two men have many similarities, the same with their father for the longest time, and also expressed their opinions on the involvement of a third party in the marriage relationship, and they both seem to be strong, but they have scarred hearts.
The second sister Jia Nai starts from her feelings, always meets people unladylike, she often makes friends with a boyfriend who wants to borrow money from her, but soon there is no result, a bit like the 2020 animated movie looking for Kawatani Reka in the little witch DoReMi.
At work, Duan Jianai learned that Miss Ninomiya, the owner of the sea cat canteen who took good care of them, was seriously ill, and in her life experience, she also learned to understand the mood of workers facing seriously ill patients.
Kano and Yuki often quarrel, their values are slightly different, but they still understand each other, and I like the scene where she talks to Yuki, and discusses how to face the fact that she is powerless to change at work.
The personality of the third sister Qianjia is more like a child, perhaps it is not a particularly troublesome relationship, her story is less inky, mostly with the sisters, but still a little bit to her relationship with the owner of the sporting goods club. I like this pair of CP, the boss's love of football allows him to support the soccer team of XiaoLing, and he has an interest in mountain climbing, suffering from toe accidents, so he did not continue to climb, but he also regained confidence in the end, hoping that he can embark on the challenge again.
But a certain part of Qianjia is also a part of her small regrets, from the age of estimation, about 5, 6 years old, her parents left them separately, in other words, she is the least between the four sisters and the father, as a sister but the memory of the father is connected through the sisters, although it is not specifically stated, but if I encounter such a situation, I should feel regretful.
The rhythm of the film's narrative is gentle, but the intertwined story lines make the emotions stacked in layers, as if the tide unconsciously brought my emotions to the climax, such a rhythm is easy for me to feel when watching Japanese movies, the tension is very restrained, but careful tasting can cause different emotions.
The foreshadowing of the echoes of the movie is one of the reasons why I was deeply attracted in the process of watching, such as Yuki sister considering the hospice ward service, corresponding to Miss Ninomiya's serious illness; Yuki sister and Xiao Suzu discussed their views on the affair, and did not expect that Yuki sister herself almost became a third party that may destroy the marriage of others; the plum wine brewed by the grandmother at home became a relic of reconciliation between Yuki and her mother, etc. These connections are like a needle and a thread that connects the stories of the four sisters together, delicate and full of ups and downs.
There is also a point of view is the interaction of the four sisters at home, at the beginning of the small bell and everyone's sense of strangeness, to the back like a family of ease, because the house they live in is the main scene, so such interaction makes people quickly feel the atmosphere of the family, but also very obedient to the acting skills of the four actors, the personality of the character is very natural.
Speaking of the four sisters, when I think back to the four of them after watching the movie, what comes to mind is a little woman with four sisters, but the two are completely different stories, and here I will simply share my associations and will not discuss them.
Finally, Miss Ninomiya, the owner of the sea cat canteen, almost grew up watching the three sisters grow up, took great care of their family, and the children of the football team also liked to eat there. She is a very gentle and kind good person, even if she has to take away the storefront she inherited because of her illness and her brother's affairs, she still grasps the opportunity to appreciate all kinds of beautiful things, and will have a positive attitude to influence the people around her, and this is also the philosophy of life that I hope I can have, bringing good things to the people around me.
The Sea Street Diary uses a very delicate story to touch on the serious family relationship, and the film does not tell us what is right in a preachy way, but through one story after another, it tells the audience the relationship between the four sisters and how they face such a complicated life.
Therefore, the overall mood after reading is very good, although the middle is always worried about whether there is a sense of tension caused by foreshadowing, but the emotional ups and downs brought by ordinary stories are still very powerful.
Kore-eda's narrative rhythm in this film impressed me very much, and good stories are always ordinary and wonderful.
