"Double Deer Diagram", silk, color, 120 cm in length and 50.5 cm in width, is the work of Shen Quan, a painter from Zhejiang in the Qing Dynasty. The picture depicts the scenery of the wilderness: the autumn breeze is cold, the grass blades are sparse, and the mountain springs are flowing. Two sika deer rested by the creek on the hillside, their backs dense, well-built, horned male deer looking up, and the doe next to them looked back. In the distance, a clear spring poured down, and in the near distance there were several springs rushing down, and the spring water stirred the mountain stone to bring life to the deep mountain. Technically, the penmanship is precise, the workmanship is delicate, the hair is revealed, and the object is extremely realistic and conveying. The word "deer" and "lu" are consonant, symbolizing auspicious longevity and promotion, so it is often used to indicate prosperity.
When Shen Quan was young, his family was poor, and he learned to tie paper flowers with his father. Around the age of 20, he engaged in painting and made a living from it. His paintings were far away from the Huang Zhen school, close to the Ming Dynasty Lü Ji, who wrote flowers and feathers and walking beasts, and was known for his precision and beauty, and was also good at painting ladies. In the ninth year of Yongzheng (1731), Shen Quan was hired by the Japanese Emperor, accompanied by his disciples Zheng Pei, Gao Jun, etc. to travel east to Japan, which lasted for 3 years, forming the "Nanping School" sketches, which were highly respected by the Japanese people, known as "the first imported painter", from the study of painters, the Japanese Edo period Nagasaki school was formed under its influence, especially The Most Famous in Maruyama.
After Shen Quan's return to China, his reputation was greatly shaken, and when it reached the capital, the imperial court ordered Shen Quan to paint a tribute. Shen Quan successively painted auspicious allegorical paintings for the court, and thus Shen Quan and his disciple Tong Heng were known as court painters in the history of Chinese painting. In his later years, Shen Quan lived in Suzhou and devoted himself tirelessly to the study of the art of calligraphy and painting. Shen Quan dedicated his life to the cause of painting, on the basis of inheriting the tradition of the Academy, he created the powerful Nanping School of Painting, which was unique in Jiangnan at that time, and there were poems that gave it a high evaluation of "Jiangnan master who is the first, Wu Xing Shen sheng is unmatched."
