Hideyoshi, who has reached the peak of his life, and the misfortune of his later years

After Oda Nobunaga's death due to the honnoji Rebellion, Toyotomi Hideyoshi sent troops to attack the rebel Mitsuhide Akira and swept away all hostile forces in one fell swoop, eventually unifying Japan. In order to further control the whole country and show power, Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle in 1585 and became a "Sekibai" above ten thousand people under one person, and was given the surname Toyotomi by the imperial court. If the story follows this pace, Toyotomi Hideyoshi would have taken control of Japan and begun to enjoy a good old age. However, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was obviously not satisfied with being the boss of Japan, but coveted a larger territory in a vain attempt to conquer Daming and become emperor in China. As a result, retribution began to come, and Toyotomi's life began to move towards bad luck and suffered multiple severe blows.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi
First, in 1591, the three-year-old man Tsurumaru died prematurely.
This is the child born to Hideyoshi and his favorite side room, Yododo, and is very cute and has high hopes. Hideyoshi, who lost his son in his later years, was very sad and had no successor, so he only took Toyotomi Hideji as his adopted son and ordered him to succeed him as "Sekibai". However, in 1593, Yododo again gave birth to Hideyoshi. In order to be able to take over the work of his own son in the future, the adopted son xiushi became a needle in the eye. Therefore, in 1595, Hideyoshi found an excuse for Hideyoshi's rebellion and ordered Hideji and his men to commit suicide by caesarean section at Qingyan Temple, which is known as the "Toyotomi Hideji Incident". It can be seen that the problem of succession has always been toyotomi Hideyoshi's heart disease, and he has not been able to deal with this problem well until his death.

Secondly, between 1592 and 1598, he sent two troops to Korea, and finally failed miserably, which is the famous "Battle of Wenlu Qingchang".
In order to fulfill Oda Nobunaga's dream of conquering Korea, and even more to realize his ambition to dominate the Central Plains, Toyotomi Hideyoshi twice sent troops to Korea, although he achieved certain results, but overall it was a failure and failed to achieve the predetermined goal, so this military defeat also caused a great psychological blow to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Third, the death of his brother and the suicide of Senrihu.
Hideyoshi's younger brother Hidenaga was an important advisor and spiritual pillar throughout his life. After Hideyoshi seized the world, it was Hidenaga who was silently supportive. However, Xiu chang has always been firmly opposed to sending troops to Korea. Perhaps Hidenaga had the foresight to send an invasion of Korea to deal a devastating blow to Hideyoshi. Unfortunately, Hidenaga died of illness on February 15, 1591, and his advice before his death failed to stop Hideyoshi from marching into the dynasty. It is said that Hidenaga's death hit Hideyoshi very hard, and after that, he began to have a lot of strange words and deeds, and his spirit began to slowly collapse.

What accelerated this run was the death of another important person, that is, The famous "tea saint" Senritsu in Japan. Chiritsu began serving Hideyoshi after Nobunaga's death, and was deeply favored and an important figure in Hideyoshi's ability to communicate spiritually, but on April 21, 1591, he was given the opportunity to commit suicide by caesarean section for offending Hideyoshi. As for why Hideyoshi ordered Senritsu to commit suicide, historical research is inconclusive, but there are several theories: one is that Hideyoshi wanted Naritsu's daughter to be a concubine, and after being ruthlessly rejected, he resented it. The second theory is that Ritsuki was embroiled in a power struggle within the Toyotomi regime after Hidenaga's death. The third theory is that Rishu criticized the invasion of Korea. The fourth theory is that there is a huge difference in perception between Hideyoshi as a power man and Rishiu as an artist. The fifth theory is that Ritsu was a spy of Tokugawa Ieyasu who attempted to poison Hideyoshi's tea. The sixth theory is that Hideyoshi was poured with tea. Whatever the reason, the death of the closest people around him did cause a lot of mental pressure on Hideyoshi.

This succession of bad luck dealt a great blow to Hideyoshi, and he tried to find a way to drive out bad luck. So in 1598, he held a grand flower viewing party at Daigo-sanho-in Temple, which is known in history as "Daigo's Flower Viewing". It is said that more than 1,300 guests were invited to the banquet at that time, and women were ordered to change their clothes three times a day, and the cost of clothes alone exceeded 3 billion yen in the current currency, which shows the degree of luxury. However, this luxurious feast did not drive away hideyoshi's bad luck and bring good luck, but after the flower viewing, Hideyoshi's body slowly became weaker due to illness, and finally the treatment was ineffective, and he died on September 18, 1598, at the age of 62.

So, what kind of illness did Toyotomi Hideyoshi get?

Regarding Hideyoshi's etiology, the history books do not record in detail, most of which are historians' speculations based on a small amount of historical materials, and there are four main types of accounts: colorectal cancer, beriberi, venereal diseases, and kidney deficiency.

However, it is generally believed that although beriberi can cause death, the evidence is not too sufficient; and when it comes to kidney deficiency, only hideyoshi's 50s can still let Yododen have children, which is enough to prove that Hideyoshi's waist can still be straight. The theory of colorectal cancer is mainly derived from the records of the Christian missionary Rodriguez, who is said to have visited Hideyoshi when he was seriously ill, and later left behind "dry like an empty shell, is it really a human?" It's like a ghost." Most historians, based on Rodriguez's account, believe that Hideyoshi had cancer, which dried up and did not take human form. However, more and more historians now believe that Hideyoshi did not die of colorectal cancer, but from venereal diseases, and that Hideyoshi indulged in female sex in his later years and thus suffered from syphilis. This is mainly analyzed from the symptoms he exhibited, after his illness, his body became weaker and weaker, often cramping abdominal pain and vomiting, and even sometimes incontinence. In the Warring States period, medical technology was not yet developed, mainly relying on traditional Chinese medicine for treatment, and syphilis was almost an incurable disease at that time. So why the information on Hideyoshi's death has not been left, Japanese historians mainly believe that Tokugawa Ieyasu later opposed the Toyotomi family, in order to completely eliminate Hideyoshi's influence, all the related historical materials were burned.
