Kabul, 24 Jul (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of the Interior announced on 24 July that a curfew would be imposed in 31 of the country's 34 provinces in response to the recent surge in violence in the country.

According to Afghan media reports, the Afghan Ministry of the Interior decided to impose a curfew in 31 provinces except Kabul Province, where the capital Kabul is located, and Nangarhar Province and Panjshir Province in the east. According to the curfew, people must stay at home and are not allowed to go out from 22:00 to 4:00 the next day.

The Interior Ministry said the curfew was imposed to curb the surge in violence caused by the Taliban's recent increased offensive.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced in April that the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan would begin on May 1 and be completely withdrawn by September 11. On July 8, he added that the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan would end on August 31. With the accelerated withdrawal of US troops, the Taliban and the Afghan government have become increasingly fierce, and the security situation in Afghanistan has continued to deteriorate. Mili, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on July 21 that the Taliban now controls about half of the country's 419 regions.
