The double-sided fireplace, as the name suggests, has two symmetrical furnace doors at the front and back, sharing a hearth and chimney, and the English name is Double-Sided Fireplace. Double has the meaning of "double", "pair", "double", it can be seen that having two doors of exactly the same size but located on both sides of the fireplace is the basic feature of the double-sided fireplace. Both doors can be opened to ignite, add firewood and watch the flames from either side, and one fireplace acts as if it were two fireplaces installed back-to-back.
The history of double-sided fireplaces is not long, until then the fireplace has been considered to be only installed with its back against the façade. With the advent of the double-sided fireplace, this traditional concept was broken, and the fireplace gradually "invaded" from the wall to the central core of the building. From a remote corner to the center of the layout, the spatial influence of fireplaces (including heating and atmosphere-creating capabilities) has multiplied, and correspondingly, the location of the chimney has also moved from the exterior wall of the house to the interior of the building, and the following two sets of figures show this change.

Double-sided fireplace
Single-sided fireplace
The double-sided fireplace can be perfectly combined with the partition structure to heat two adjacent areas at the same time. This novel structure has greatly expanded the scope of application of the fireplace, once it came out, it quickly became popular, and major fireplace manufacturers have also launched their own double-sided styles, TOTEM launched her first double-sided fireplace RV Frontal 800 in 2010, and today 8 products have been put on the market.
Founded in 1998 in france TOTEM fireplace company, after 20 years of development has become one of the most famous fireplace companies in Europe, its first lifting furnace door broke the traditional horizontal open furnace door width can not exceed 1m limit, laid the foundation for the development of large-size fireplaces, so that the fireplace got rid of the image positioning of simple heating equipment, and gradually evolved into modern, efficient and environmentally friendly "heating furniture", so that it still firmly occupies the center of the living room in this era full of electronic equipment. In France, which is known for its fashion, TOTEM is a widely known brand that is synonymous with luxury fireplaces.
Mention of TOTEM fireplaces is one of its original lift-type furnace doors, a revolutionary door mechanism invented by TOTEM in 1998. With precision-manufactured chains, counterweights and shock springs, the huge door can be opened/closed effortlessly with just one finger, running smoothly and easily, while lifting upwards allows the entire door to be submerged inside the wall, giving the impression of being extremely impressive on first contact.
The advent of lift-type furnace doors brings three distinct benefits:
Larger size furnace doors can be made (meaning larger fire viewing windows);
Can be freely switched between closed combustion and open combustion (occasionally you may prefer an open burning fire);
Opening and closing furnace doors does not take up space (see figure below).
Many friends may ask when the furnace door is lifted upwards, the entire furnace door is hidden in the upper wall, so how to wipe the furnace door glass? Rest assured, TOTEM has long offered the perfect solution.
The sliding door can not only slide up and down, but also rotate horizontally to open, which is designed to wipe the glass.
TOTEM's product line is very comprehensive and covers almost all styles of fireplaces: single-sided fireplaces, double-sided fireplaces, corner fireplaces, island fireplaces, hanging fireplaces, floor fireplaces... ; The width of the furnace door ranges from the narrowest 580mm to the ultra-wide 1980mm, and even a personalized custom fireplace can be provided according to the customer's requirements. The rich and varied styles provide designers with great imagination and creative freedom, making TOTEM the first choice brand for architects and interior designers in luxury fireplaces.
The first feature of the luxury fireplace is the "large size", and the meticulously crafted fireplace cannot be regarded as a luxury fireplace in the true sense if the fire viewing window is too small. Large or high living rooms are a place for luxurious fireplaces, and large spaces must be equipped with large fireplaces to keep the surrounding furnishings in harmony.
Of course, a larger hearth does not mean that you can load firewood without restrictions, and excessive firewood burning violently can lead to excessive combustion, which in severe cases can cause irreversible damage to the fireplace. In order to protect the fireplace from prolonged high temperature burning, TOTEM designed a self-locking mechanism, when the furnace temperature is too high, the furnace door will be locked, preventing the user from opening the furnace door to continue adding firewood, until the temperature drops to normal levels will not unlock the furnace door. It is recommended that the height of the firewood pile should not exceed 1/2 of the height of the hearth, and two or three sticks of burning wood can be added each time the firewood is added, and it is not necessary to add too much firewood at one time to save trouble.
Multi-point air supply is another feature of THETEM fireplace.
Each fireplace has four hot air outlets at the top, and the heat generated by the fireplace can be transported to the next door or upstairs room after connecting the air supply pipe to achieve the effect of central heating. This part of the hot air does not come from the combustion exhaust in the furnace chamber, but from the hot air that flows around the outer wall of the furnace chamber and is discharged from the top after being heated by the latter.
TOTEM offers two sets of mechanisms to control the heat output of the fireplace, one is the intake control valve and the other is the damper control lever. The former controls the intensity of firewood combustion (the more oxygen is abundant, the more intense the combustion), and the latter controls the emission rate of combustion exhaust gas (the faster the smoke is emitted, the more heat is lost to the outdoors, and vice versa, more heat can be left indoors). The figure below shows how the air intake control valve works: pulling the handle outward increases the air intake and pushing the handle inward decreases the air intake. It should be noted that the intake air control valve can only control the main inlet air volume (the air flow entering the furnace from the bottom of the furnace), and the other two air intakes, namely the top air intake and the back air inlet, are uncontrolled and cannot be closed, so you will find that even if the inlet control valve fire is completely closed after the furnace fire is completely burned, the furnace fire will not be extinguished, but the combustion is not so violent.
Through the damper control lever, the opening and closing angle of the damper baffle can be adjusted, thereby changing the cross-sectional area of the flue and controlling the smoke exhaust speed. Flick the damper control lever to the right, the baffle opens, the smoke extraction speed is accelerated, and more heat is discharged outdoors; pull the damper control lever to the left, the baffle is closed, the smoke exhaust speed is slowed down, and the heat remains more indoors.
When lighting a fire, adding firewood or using the TOTEM fireplace as an open fireplace, the damper can be fully opened (the control lever is dialed to the right end), so that the pumping force of the chimney is maximized, which is conducive to rapid ignition and prevents the phenomenon of pouring smoke.
The damper baffle is not a complete circle (see figure below), so structurally speaking, the flue will not be completely sealed by the baffle, and can only be adjusted in the range of full opening and 20% open, so the design is well understood, because if the baffle can completely close the flue, then the flue gas has no way to escape, can only be forced to overflow into the room, no one wants to let this happen.
It should be noted that the standard configuration of TOTEM fireplaces does not include door frames (because some users prefer marble for door frames).
Because the double-sided fireplace can take into account the heating of the space on both sides at the same time and the visual transparency is widely used in the structure of space separation, such as the partition between the living room and the dining room, the partition wall between the living room and the study, and even installed in the external wall of the building between the courtyard and the living room, playing the effect of "partitioning and continuously", which can significantly enhance the decoration style. The installation position of the double-sided fireplace can be very flexible, and the pictures below show several typical cases.
Double-sided fireplace due to the installation of two sets of lifting furnace doors so the cost is relatively high, considering the affordability of domestic consumers, we chose to ENTER popular two models to introduce domestic, their size and appearance as shown in the following figure.
appraise:
The advantages of the double-sided fireplace are obvious and incomparable, compared with the single-sided fireplace, its spatial influence range is greater, the heat radiation is more uniform, and it plays a "focal point" role in the overall layout of the decoration. The presence of a double-sided fireplace makes both sides of the partition a favorite area, and it is clear what the value and role of this fireplace is clear by looking at where guests like to gather to chat. Of course, to install a double-sided fireplace you need to consider in advance the direction of the chimney, its impact on the upstairs space and the waterproof treatment of the roof, which involve the foundation decoration part, so the fireplace will need to be given priority when designing the decoration plan.
A two-sided fireplace is equivalent to two single-sided fireplaces, and the effect is better and more designed, and the price is only 30% more expensive than the one-sided fireplace of the same size of TOTEM. If you prefer modern décor and want a different artistic effect, a double-sided fireplace should definitely be one of the top few items on your bucket list.
