At about 2:00 p.m. on August 17, 2016, when Ma Yu was washing a car on the Moon River Dam in Dongfeng Town, he suddenly saw a woman and a small boy being swept into the river whirlpool, he picked up a bamboo pole, took off his clothes and jumped into the river to rescue, but due to the rapid flow of the river, the two people who fell into the water drifted downstream to the whirlpool.
Ma Yu continued to swim to the two people who fell into the water, first pushing the nearest woman out of the whirlpool, and then swimming to the little boy again to rescue him, he was beaten by the rushing waves, and lost consciousness and was swept away by the torrent. The people on the shore searched in many ways and found Ma Yu, who was unconscious, 40 meters downstream of the Moon River from the scene of the incident, but after 120 rescue was ineffective, Ma Yu still unfortunately died. The little boy who fell into the water was rescued from danger with the help of others.
According to Ma Yu's mother, Xiong Shaoqiong, at the time of the incident, Ma Yu was only 27 years old, married and had a son. After the death of his son, the whole family was immersed in grief, "Now when I mention him, I also want to cry, but I can't cry, and this family wants me to support, and there are grandchildren to raise."
