Review of the 3rd Shangri-La International Bird Watching Festival 2018

The 3rd Shangri-La International Bird Watching Festival 2018 has been judged after 3 days of intense competition and 3 hours of questioning and defending the participating teams last night. Entrusted by the Competition Department of the Organizing Committee, Professor Han Lianxian of Southwest Forestry University commented on the results of the 3rd Shangri-La International Bird Watching Festival Bird Watching Competition on behalf of the judges of the Competition Department of the Organizing Committee.

1. Characteristics of the Shangri-La International Bird Watching Festival Bird Watching Competition

The 3rd Bird Watching Festival Bird Watching Competition starts at 7:00 on December 20 and ends at 19:00 on the 22nd, lasting three days. The competition set up a main competition area of Songzanlin Temple, an important wetland of NapaHai International- Alpine Botanical Garden, two sub-divisions of the Tangman River Valley in Nixi Township and the Ring Line of Xiaozhongdian Reservoir. The Shangri-La International Bird watching festival bird watching competition has the following characteristics in the same type of competition in China: high altitude, long time course, multi-division. It is a great challenge to the physical strength and will of the contestants. A small number of players in this competition have alpine reactions and even acute pulmonary edema. Fortunately, the organizing committee of this bird watching festival has done a very meticulous and thorough job, and specially arranged doctors and ambulances to choose sick people

The hand was sent to the hospital in time for treatment and is currently recovering well.

Second, the results of this year's bird watching competition: increased species records, revealing the migratory behavior of some birds.

There are 16 participating teams and 64 participants in this bird watching festival. A total of 170 valid bird species were recorded. Compared with the list of birds recorded in the first and second bird watching festivals, 25 new bird species were recorded in the third bird watching festival, namely blue-headed diving duck, magpie duck, oxback heron, bearded vulture, lone sand cone, fire spotted dove, gray capuchin, white-throated fantail, red-billed blue magpie, rock swallow, orange spotted willow warbler, yellow-waisted willow warbler, yellow-browed willow warbler, Sichuan willow warbler, brown-necked hook-billed bird, brown-headed sparrowhawk, brown-headed sparrowhawk, brown-headed bird finch, brown-necked bird, black-necked ibis, red-tailed blue-tailed plover, red-tailed waterwing, white-crowned swallowtail, collared rock wagtail, yellow-necked wax-billed finch, pseudo-large suzaku, red-breasted Suzaku.

The only bird species recorded by the team are 9 species, namely the Fire Spotted Dove, the White-necked Crow, the White-cheeked Noisy Stork, and the Purple HowlingBird recorded by the Young Egret Team; Grey capuchin recorded by the Giang Sun Moon Team; Red-flanked blue-tailed Plover recorded by the Crane Team; The Leading Rock Wren and the Red-breasted Suzaku recorded by the Highland Golden Eagle Team: The Brown Crow Finches recorded by the Shangri-La Team.

At present, there are several systems for the domestic bird list, and the bird watching circle uses the bird protection international bird list based on the results of DNA molecular research, which is characterized by rapid name change, and many subspecies have been promoted to species. Professional scholars are more conservative, using a morphological bird list. The Red List of Vertebrates in China jointly issued by the Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The number of bird species between the two varies greatly.

In 2018, I compiled the "Shangri-La City Wildlife Resources Survey Report", which summarized the bird species list, and recorded 360 bird species in shangri-La City. Among them, the white-shouldered eagle is a new record added to the first bird watching festival. This year's Bird Watching Festival added seven new records to the bird list of Shangri-La City, namely the Blue-headed Diving Duck, the Chinese Autumn Sand Duck, the Ordinary Buzzard, the Pseudo-Great Suzaku, the Yellow-billed Crested Finch, the Great Sand Cone, and the Lone Sand Cone. The observation records of the Chinese autumn sand duck and the blue-headed diving duck have made us aware of these two endangered species, which can be distributed in the plateau lake at an altitude of 3300 meters in winter to overwinter, providing new information for the distribution and wintering grounds of these two rare species.

This bird watching competition provides a better understanding of the migratory habits of birds. The grey capuchin, chestnut-backed rock wren, collar rock wren, fire spotted dove, large sand cone, lone sand cone and other birds recorded in the ornithological monographs recorded in the ornithology monograph, that they migrate south in autumn, and do not inhabit the shangri-La Plateau mountains in the north of latitude and 3300 meters above sea level in winter.

Some of the contestants also observed an interesting phenomenon in the Tangman River Valley where the river and brown river were distributed in the same domain.

Third, improve your ability to use reference books

There is a rule in this competition that if the judges question and determine that there are more than 10 invalid bird species observation records, the results of the participating teams will be invalid. The competition judges did not enforce this rule. Individual teams identify more bird species incorrectly. Personally, I think the reason lies in two issues. One is to believe too much in books. No matter how well written a book is, there may be errors, so you can't rely on one book to identify bird species, but read more than a few different books. Second, simply identify the bird by picture. Do not read the textual description of the bird species. China is very large, there are many bird subspecies, painting and photo books can not depict all subspecies, but there will be a more detailed introduction in the text description, so be sure to read the text introduction carefully.
