Purpose and rationale for the course

Course Objectives:

Through learning and preliminarily mastering the basic theories, experimental techniques and basic knowledge of immunology and biopharmaceuticals, preliminarily understanding the research progress, existing problems, development countermeasures and development prospects of immunology and biopharmaceuticals, it plays a role in stimulating interest, mastering knowledge, understanding the situation and broadening the thinking, and can independently consult domestic and foreign literature for in-depth study, and even embark on the road of relevant professional scientific research.

Reasons for starting:

Immunology is an important backbone bridge course for life sciences and biotechnology related disciplines, which is closely related to the daily healthy life of human beings, so it is important to learn immunology courses well. Immunology is the frontier discipline of life science and medical development, its development is changing with each passing day, has now become an independent discipline, and biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics and omics, etc. interpenetrating, mutual promotion, rapid development, in the past 20 years has made a series of breakthrough achievements. Since 1901, 22 immunologists have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology 15 times.

Immunology is closely related to biopharmaceuticals, especially biologics. Existing biological drugs are mainly biological products, including interferons, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor, hematopoietic cytokines, growth factors, therapeutic hormones, soluble receptors and adhesion molecule drugs, hemolytic drugs, blood products, blood substitutes, therapeutic enzymes, antibodies, vaccines and their adjuvants, and nucleic acid therapy.

Classification of biological drugs in the new century: (1) gene drugs: therapeutic genes, antisense nucleic acids and ribozymes, etc.; (2) genetically engineered drugs: recombinant biologically active proteins, polypeptides and their modifiers manufactured by genetic engineering and protein engineering techniques, such as therapeutic proteins, antibodies, vaccines, concatenants, fusion proteins and soluble receptors; (3) natural biochemical drugs: natural biochemical active drugs of animal, plant, microbial and marine biological sources; (4) synthetic or semi-synthetic biological drugs.

Biological products (Biologicals) is a large category of biological drugs, which are prepared by using ordinary or obtained biotechnology such as genetic engineering, cell engineering, protein engineering and fermentation engineering, and various animal and human tissues and liquid biological materials for human disease prevention, treatment and diagnosis. In essence, biological products generally refer to pharmaceutical products from blood, vaccines, toxins and immune preparations, excluding traditional biological drugs such as hormones, enzyme preparations and plant metabolites, but including new biological products, that is, proteins, polypeptides, enzymes, hormones, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and cytokine drugs and their modifiers produced using recombinant DNA technology and protein engineering technology.

The university does not offer a public elective course on "Immunology and Biopharmaceuticals", but is now planning to open a new course at the request of students, and teach it in combination with actual work: taking vaccines as an example to elaborate on the whole process of research, development and industrialization of biological products, so that students can have an in-depth understanding of these three processes and their details from the overall situation; adding the latest contents such as omics, bioinformatics and systems biology, genome and post-genome drug research and development that are not available in conventional courses.

The main lecturer Zhang Deli has been studying and engaged in immunology and biopharmaceutical research for a long time, and is now a professor and doctoral supervisor of the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine of the College of Veterinary Medicine of our university introduced from Tsinghua University, and teaches undergraduate courses "Veterinary Microbiology", "Animal Microbiology" and "Aquatic Microbiology and Immunology", and is well qualified to teach the newly opened public elective courses. Obtained two important landmark identification results: (1) Jingkeden Zi 20040602: the first successful development and long-term wide application of a safe and efficient mink enteritis virus cell culture inactivated vaccine; (2) general forensic 2002121008: the first discovery and successful replication of malignant rhabdomyoidoma (MRT) in a model animal, which provides an opportunity to elucidate the mystery of its origin; and preliminarily elucidates the occurrence and development of MRT from the perspective of chromosomal genetic variation. From a comparative medical point of view, the histiocyte origin of MRT is revealed, the problem of oncogenic toxicology experiments of passage cell lines is solved, and the relationship between genetic variability and carcinogenicity (tumor) is revealed. Took the lead in implementing the research of electronic cloning of new human genes, and made important progress in the separation of new methods of gene (including non-coding RNA) recognition and functional genes: a method of discovering new genes in humans and animals from the perspective of computer software analysis, artificial intervention analysis and combination with experimental biology was established, and proved that it is an effective way to accelerate gene cloning and identification; the algorithm research of collaborators on new gene recognition and regulatory region prediction significantly improved the accuracy of gene prediction and promoter prediction. Preliminary cooperation to establish automated electronic cloning software for new human and animal genes; electronic cloning of more than 100 new human genes, but also the use of computers to identify 800 new human gene candidates, some of the gene coding sequences have been experimentally confirmed and cited, several of which have shown obvious biological function activity in animal experiments; found that there are various types of human gene pattern reference sequences (REFSEQ) published by the NCBI Genome Annotation Project in the United States. This result suggests that NCBI's REFSEQ database should be used with caution.
