When he first returned to China, Zhang Jingsheng, who had lived overseas for a long time, was incompatible with the personalities around him in terms of living habits and handling things, and was forced to resign due to successive public opinion attacks after only half a year as the principal of a middle school in Chao'an.
When it comes to North Drift, Zhang Jingsheng is also one of them. After resigning from high school, he chose to go north and went to The National Peking University to become a professor of philosophy. Here, he devoted himself to the study of sexology and sociology, and met tan Xihong, a scholar who studied in France.
Some people say that middle-aged men have three major lucks: promotion, wealth, and death of their wives. As the founder of the Department of Biology of Peking University, Tan Xihong naturally has no shortage of fame and money. And the third thing to die of his wife, at the age of 33, was finally realized in 1923.
Logically, the death of a wife as a husband should be extremely sad. Even if the feelings are not compatible, a day of husband and wife for a hundred days, it should also be hurt. But Tan Xihong did not, or his pain was not obvious. Because just two months later, he fell in love with his wife and sister, 22-year-old Chen Shujun, and then moved in.

This incident caused a big discussion about love at that time, and it made a lot of noise in the city. But while most people are bashing Tan Xihong's ruthlessness, Zhang Jingsheng has a very different view.
On April 19 of the same year, Zhang Jingsheng published an article in the Morning News Supplement to defend Tan Xihong, entitled "The Law of Love and the Study of Ms. Chen Shujun's Affairs". There are four points in the content:
1. Love is conditional. These conditions include feelings, personality, talent, reputation, and so on. The more complete the conditions, the stronger the love.
2. Love is comparable. According to the number and level of conditions as a mate selection criterion, it is an inevitable rule in human psychology.
3. Love can be transformed. There are more natural choices, and there are choices that nature hopes to continue to find better.
4. Husband and wife as a kind of friends, love is a deeper, more advanced friendship.
After the article was published, the newspaper received more than 60 replies, almost all of which opposed Zhang Jingsheng's views. It is worth mentioning that Mr. Lu Xun did not think that Zhang Jingsheng was wrong, but only pointed out that the practice of Zhang Jingsheng's views should be about the 25th century.
Being able to discuss what love is in public places such as newspapers and periodicals shows that the pace of the Republic of China period towards the great era of liberation has been very fast. At that time, Zhang Jingsheng was the chairman of the "Peking University Customs Investigation Committee", and under the influence of this free research atmosphere, he believed that sex and sex-related customs should also be studied, so in May 1926, under the name of the Sex Education Society, he published "History of Sex" (the first collection of sexual education series).
In addition, Zhang Jingsheng also opened a "beauty bookstore" in Shanghai to sell his own sexology books. Unexpectedly, a small book actually caused an uproar, and he himself became a famous figure in China's twentieth-century cultural history, and was named "Doctor of Sexology", but he also paid a heavy price for his disgrace.

Authorities considered Mr. Zhang's books to be offensive and not only banned all the books, but also sealed his shop. Zhang Jingsheng, who was frustrated, had no choice but to hide by Xizi Lake, but was expelled by the authorities.
Later, it is said that someone saw Zhang Jingsheng holding a Buddha bead in a temple in Hangzhou, kneeling on a lotus pedestal, murmuring a sutra, and claiming that this is the day and yesterday.
After disappearing for a few years, Zhang Jingsheng traveled to France again to study the social basis of autonomy and the countryside.
So, as a "doctor of sexology", what is Zhang Jingsheng's own love story?
Zhang Jingsheng's original wife, Xu Chunying, is a traditional woman with no new ideas. Later, when Zhang Jingsheng was a professor at Peking University, he followed his "love rule" and "love can change", fell in love with Chu Songxue, a strange woman of the Republic of China, and married him.
The acquaintance of the two also stemmed from the Morning News Supplement. In May 1923, Zhang Jingsheng read an article by Chu Songxue in the newspaper to the effect that she opposed arranged marriages and advocated free love, and because of this, she severed ties with her family and came to Shanxi from the far south alone to become a teacher.
Such a move, even today, requires great courage, not to mention the old era, which was not yet fully emancipated. Right or wrong, we don't care for the time being, with this courage alone, Chu Songxue deserves the three words of "strange woman".
After Zhang Jingsheng read this article, the spark of admiration finally appeared, probably that is the feeling of heartbeat! He immediately wrote a letter to comfort Chu Songxue and briefly introduce himself to her.
Not long after, Zhang Jingsheng received a reply from Chu Songxue. The two see each other as they always have, they hate each other late, and their feelings continue to heat up.
But out of the mix always have to pay back. When Zhang Jingsheng followed his own love rules and abandoned his original match to be with Chu Songxue, he probably did not dream that one day, Chu Songxue would have another love and leave himself.
At the same time, Zhang Jingsheng's original wife, Xu Chunying, finally realized that her husband was gradually drifting away from herself. This woman, who has not received a new education, is not trying to save the feelings she regards as life in the past. So she made perhaps the bravest decision of her life.
That is, to leave the homeland and go to a girls' school in Chao'an. She thought that as long as her knowledge improved, she would inevitably be able to win the favor of her husband.
But this woman is not waiting for a changed husband, but a child who does not belong to her at all.
Chu Songxue had another love, and after leaving Zhang Jingsheng, he actually gave the child born to him and Zhang Jingsheng to Xu Chunying to raise. It was really a man sitting in the house, hats coming from heaven.
Unexpectedly, Xu Chunying did not refuse, and she regarded the child as her own childless. The child also called Xu Chunying Ah Niang, which brought a little relief to this poor weak woman.
In 1931, Zhang Jingsheng returned to his hometown from France again. This time, instead of choosing to go to the big city, he spent thousands of yuan to build a wooden house in the field and live in seclusion.

Zhang Jingsheng reads and studies here every day. The daily routine is very regular, getting up at five o'clock every morning, then bathing in the creek, and exercising after washing. Breakfast is served at seven o'clock, with green vegetables, eggs, beef, tofu, fresh fish, noodles and the like.
Interestingly, Dr. Zhang specially placed a scale on his stove, and when eating, he used a plate to put the food on the scale first, the breakfast was two pounds, the lunch was two pounds and four two, and the dinner was one pound eight two, which was very strict.
After breakfast, Dr. Zhang began to work. Do translation and writing in the morning, read or copy in the afternoon, and do not receive all relatives and friends during working hours.
When the weather is good, Zhang Jingsheng will take his children to wander around the village, and when he sees that the ditches are not clear, or where the garbage has not been removed, he will order the nearby villagers to clean up. Sometimes they also go to the villagers' kitchens and urge them to pay attention to hygiene.
If these are still acceptable, then the latter thing was a bit strange at the time. Zhang Jingsheng also advised the women in the village not to corset their breasts and open their heavenly breasts. Although Zhang Jingsheng's suggestion itself was not malicious, at that time, it was inevitable that there was a suspicion of flirtation.
Because Zhang Jingsheng lived in the log cabin he built for a long time, his wife went to the field to visit him. One day, as soon as Xu Chunying opened the door of the wooden house, Zhang Jingsheng was furious, scolded Xu Chunying for not paying attention to hygiene, and brought some dirty things into the house. He asked Xu Chunying to knock on the door every time she entered the door in the future, and stipulated that she would speak outside the door.
In this way, Xu Chunying could not bear to be alone in the empty boudoir, depressed all day long, and finally committed suicide by taking poison in March 1932.

This folk song tells the heartache of Xu Chunying as the wife of the "Doctor of Sexology", and no one can understand why Zhang Jingsheng, who studies sexology and discusses love, can neither make his original wife happy, nor can he let himself get a happy love.
If the love he studied was not for his own woman, nor for himself, then for whose happiness did it exist?
Regarding the merits and faults of Zhang Jingsheng, the "Doctor of Sexology", further in-depth exploration is needed. But in the end, his attitude to love and his own emotional encounters are really lamentable.
