Chen Jiageng, born on October 21, 1874 in Jimei Society, Tong'an County, Quanzhou Province, Fujian Province (now Jimei District, Xiamen, Fujian Province), was a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, entrepreneur, educator, philanthropist and social activist.
After the all-out War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression began, Chen Jiageng mobilized overseas Chinese in Nanyang to support the motherland's War of Resistance. In the winter of 1939, he initiated the organization of the "Nanyang Overseas Chinese Repatriation Condolence Expedition" to return to China to investigate the situation of the civil war and the people's living conditions. Prior to this, Chen Jiageng did not know much about the Communist Party.
On May 31, 1940, when Chen Jiageng came to Yan'an, he saw that the cave decoration where Mao Zedong lived and worked in Yangjialing was very simple, only an old desk and a few wooden stools of varying lengths and heights; students did not have to salute when they entered the door, they found a chair to sit down to participate in the conversation, without restraint; at the Fourth Military Academy in Yan'an, a basketball student shouted to Zhu De: "The commander-in-chief will come to a game." "Judd took off his coat and went to the team to play against the students...
In just 9 days, Chen Jiageng discovered the simplicity and incorruptibility of the political party in this ravine, the water and milk of relations with the people, and the full and upward mental state of going up and down, which made him "like a cloud and mist to see the blue sky", thus concluding that "China's hope is in Yan'an".
Jimei Liberation Monument
Chen Jiageng has always felt sorry for the Communist Party of China and cared for each other. During the construction of Aoyuan Garden, the soldiers of the People's Liberation Army who heroically sacrificed themselves to commemorate the liberation of Jimei were built at the Jimei Liberation Monument. As the main building of Aoyuan Garden, the monument is 28 meters high, symbolizing the glorious process of the Communist Party of China leading the people of all ethnic groups across the country to create a new China after 28 years. The seven characters of the "Jimei Liberation Monument" on the stele were written by Mao Zedong himself on May 16, 1952.
In 1949, when Chen Jiageng returned to China to attend the preparatory meeting of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference, he took a group photo with Chairman Mao Zedong in front of the Zhongnanhai Qinzheng Hall.
On August 12, 1961, Chen Jiageng died in Beijing, the coffin was transported to the south, and finally a solemn burial ceremony was held in Xiamen Jimei AoYuan, where Chen Jiageng was buried. Throughout his life, Chen Jiageng made immortal contributions to the Xinhai Revolution, national education, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the War of Liberation, and the construction of New China, and was once praised by Mao Zedong as "the banner of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation."
