A face without eyes
The director likes to make a fuss about the eyes. Running through the film is a mysterious woman named Emily, who has no pupils and naturally cannot see things, but she can see the past and present lives of this haunted house. Since we can't understand her inner activity through our eyes, this makes the character even more mysterious. In many horrific scenes, the eye is also the first to be destroyed. For example, resurrected zombies generally have only half of their faces, and the corrosive liquid also melts the woman's face. Swarms of spiders also pulled Martin's eyeballs out, while zombies in the bathtub pierced the cleaner's eyes with a steel nail. By the end of the film, Lisa and John still haven't escaped the curse, and they have both turned into zombies without pupils. Such a stroke is undoubtedly depressing, and it turns all the breakaway into futile effort. In fact, this is related to the director Lucio Ferz's previous teaching of Visconti, which also gives this absurd thriller a neorealist tone, which is given a surreal interpretation. In the early 1980s, when Italian lead-yellow films were declining, Lucio still shocked the audience with such a brilliant film, shocking the eyeballs, and the surprise of that transitional period.
