Powered by cutting-edge vision and 3D technology, combined with an incredible optical experience, Sony's spatial reality displays open up a whole new world of design and visualization for workflows in entertainment and beyond.
Known as Ghostbusters Day, June 8 marks the anniversary of the film's release in 1984, and Sony Pictures released a behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming film's sequel, Ghostbusters: The Afterlife.
This behind-the-scenes clip, starring director James Wrightman and designer François Odoi, shows how Sony's spatial reality display visualizes how cinema looks and feels in the industry.
Using the spatial reality display's unique eye-sensing technology and real-time rendering algorithms, Reitman and Audoi were able to see the main symbol of the Ghostbusters series, ECTO-1, in virtual space. They recreated this classic car by using Unity real-time 3D, allowing them to see the vehicle in a new way while maintaining its authenticity and nostalgia factor.

ECTO-1 interactive display model
In the entertainment industry, where using a variety of designs requires constant feedback, spatial reality displays can help production and design teams communicate with each other more concisely and effectively. Visualizing the model as part of the Unity review process streamlines the workflow and saves the team a lot of time making modifications to the model, allowing them to see the resulting 3D model directly and make immediate changes to its shortcomings.
With the popularity of this new 3D technology, the applications that use this new display technology for Unity workflows are now far beyond the media and entertainment space. Spatial reality displays can be used in a variety of design and visualization disciplines supported by Unity and as a new medium to provide a wide range of visual 3D visuals for a wide range of industries.
"Any tool that can be able to increase efficiency and convey concise and detailed intentions to artists is valuable to me," Audoi said. "It's a whole new opportunity for designers to really agree with decision makers in a design sense and show directors your intentions – it's a really good technique."
It is reported that "Ghostbusters: The Afterlife" will be released in theaters in the fall of 2021.
