In 1984, 8-year-old Wang Xinyu took a fancy to the Tianjin Art School and began his performing arts career. For more than 30 years, Wang Xinyu has created a vivid and three-dimensional character image on the stage, and his exquisite performance methods and flexible and meticulous emotions have conquered every audience present, which is unfinished.

On the evening of July 23, in the original drama "New West Chamber" directed by Ding Yiteng, Wang Xinyu incarnated as Cui Ruoying, a girl, and her yearning for freedom pushed her to break through the shackles of her family and explain to the audience the self-consciousness and emotional concepts of contemporary Chinese youth. Before the performance, Wang Xinyu gave an exclusive interview to the cover reporter, telling her understanding of drama performance and her interpretation of the character of Cui Ruoying.

Opera "meets" drama, bringing a new experience of combining Chinese and Western

The drama "New West Chamber" is an original drama written by Ding Yiteng and Chen Miao, directed by Ding Yiteng, and is also the first time that young drama creator Ding Yiteng challenged the "love" topic and reinterpreted the "new program" work of the ancient Chinese love legend "West Chamber".

The play tells the story of Ruo Hong who was adopted by her aunt Cui Ma since she was a child, and is in love with Ruo Ying, the daughter of Cui Ma. At the blind date held for Ruoying, Cui Mama disliked the talented Zhang Tong from a poor background, and fell in love with Zhang Tong's rich and powerful friend Zheng Qing, and Ruo Hong replaced Ruo Ying and Zheng Qing on a date, but the two had feelings for each other.

In the play, Cui Ruoying, played by Wang Xinyu, is a well-behaved girl who is just young, but with Ruo Hong's encouragement and help, her endogenous strength gradually awakens and becomes stronger. This character image with a very different personality before and after has become full and three-dimensional under Wang Xinyu's interpretation.

The reporter saw on the spot that the classic singing section of the opera Kunqu opera in the drama "New West Chamber" was combined with the modernist life lines and performances of the drama, which was a particularly exciting and enjoyable thing for Wang Xinyu, who came from a Peking opera performance background and had rich experience in drama, film and television performances, "To be able to integrate the things I learned before and these things that I later engaged in theatrical film and television performances, and present them on the stage of drama, which is a particularly exciting and enjoyable thing." ”

Ten days later, I entered the group rehearsal and won the whole scene in three days

On the stage, Wang Xinyu's performance was natural and well received by the audience. What is even more surprising is that it took her more than ten days from july 8 to the time she finally completed the entire performance of the play. "I had other performances before, and by the time Chengdu joined the group, the other actors were already in a row, and I was ten days behind them."

In the face of unfamiliar script lines and singing voices, Wang Xinyu is not anxious, but plays many years of performance experience, and makes enough efforts to keep up with the progress of the entire crew. "On the third day of joining the group, I took down all the line scheduling and singing voices. After all, if you don't take it down, you can't work in the back, so I will take it down without eating, drinking or sleeping. Moreover, my favorite is acting, and I love drama performances, film and television performances, and theater performances, so although it is very difficult, I actually enjoy the process. ”

This is not the first time Wang Xinyu has challenged the limit, in 2014, Beijing Longma Society signed a contract with the National Centre for the Performing Arts for 5 performances, and the starring actor quit temporarily 10 days before the performance, and when the producer found Wang Xinyu to save the scene, she promised it with her mouth. "That time I also memorized all the 35 pages of lines in three days, and then on the fourth day I started to work with other people, on the fifth day I went into rehearsals, and on the 10th day I performed. At that time, many people said that I acted better than the original. ”

For Wang Xinyu, the four words "drama is bigger than the sky" are a sense of identity and a belief that has been buried in his bones. "You see I actually twisted my ankle on the first day, and now I've been rubbing the medicine, but you can't show it on stage, the audience is not coming to see you hurt, the audience is here to fully feel your presentation of this character." 」 It is with this dedication to the role and the enjoyment of the stage that Wang Xinyu successfully portrays a delicate and innocent young girl Cui Ruoying who bravely pursues freedom and love for the audience.

Cooperate with the new generation to fully accept the performance ideas of the younger generation

A few days before the official start of the premiere, the cover reporter also watched the "New West Chamber" crew rehearsal. The reporter found at the scene that in addition to Wang Xinyu, the crew from the director to the actors are all post-90s or even post-00s. However, Wang Xinyu has no sense of violation in working with these young actors, and the portrayal of Cui Ruoying is delicate and moving, full of girlishness, and the precipitation of more than 30 years of acting experience makes Wang Xinyu's interpretation of the role more delicate.

During the rehearsal, Cui Ruoying on the stage had a flexible expression and a gentle singing voice; after the rehearsal, Wang Xinyu and other actors on the stage sat together and accepted a series of opinions put forward by the young director, without seeing the tone of a senior senior. "In fact, I think that no matter how old or experienced others are, their thinking is definitely different from mine, and I will definitely absorb good things, so no matter what people ask, I think it makes sense that they must absorb, because others are actually helping you." 」

In Wang Xinyu's view, this kind of humility is not a quality deliberately cultivated in the later stage, nor can it be regarded as an example that the older generation of actors consciously makes to the new generation of actors, but a natural attitude to life and an ordinary way of creation. "I don't need to show it to anybody, because that's what I always think in my heart, and we're all in a common play." Beijing Renyi has a saying called 'the spirit of a dish', in any crew, every staff is for this play to serve, everyone is a collective, we finally presented, must be a collection of everyone working together. ”

Now in addition to the front stage performance, Wang Xinyu is also doing behind-the-scenes directing work, and serves as a distinguished professor at five universities and a drama teacher in three middle schools, and she is often invited to serve as a judge for drama festivals in various universities in Beijing, and does some public welfare lectures and activities for drama to enter the campus and popularize theater. "My students love my classes, they feel like I can quickly guide them to what they want to achieve, and I enjoy being a teacher."

【Dialogue】

Wang Xinyu: "It is the love of supporting myself for so many years"

Cover News: When it comes to opera, everyone may feel very traditional, and drama is relatively trendy, how do you think of the new attempt of "New West Wing" to combine the two?

Wang Xinyu: First of all, we must look at the theme, not to say that any theme can be grafted in this way, the theme of "New West Chamber" is based on the traditional opera "West Chamber", and it also integrates a lot of modern elements, as well as some of the director's personal experience and perception, which is compatible with the stylization of opera and the emotional authenticity of drama. In fact, opera is our unique traditional art in China, but the national is the world, and I will feel a sense of pride and pride in carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture with the "imported product" of drama.

Cover News: The combination of opera and drama is very difficult to perform, right?

Wang Xinyu: I think the part of the opera must be professional, not to do half and half pull, should be completely in accordance with the program of the opera, but the heart must take the way of drama, that is, the truth. In the performance, the actor needs to completely integrate the emotions of the characters into the drama in the opera program, for example, in this process, sometimes it is a small step of pure opera, sometimes it is a completely casual pace of daily life, and it is particularly natural to integrate, I think this is for young people now or these actors in the same scene, if there is no foundation for the previous opera, it is very difficult.

Cover News: It can be seen that any role you play will have some thoughts about this character, so what is your understanding of the character of Cui Ruoying who is now playing?

Wang Xinyu: In fact, "New West Chamber" has given Cui Ruoying some thinking of many modern people, and she is no longer simply like the image of a well-behaved woman created in the opera, in order to seek her own happiness, through the help of the red lady (Ruo Hong), she bravely broke through the family imprisonment. This progress is a tone, and I hope that through the script and the director's explanation, I will integrate my understanding of this character and my own life experience into it, and present this complex character on the stage.

Cover News: In addition to the drama, you have also starred in many film and television works, and now you still insist on the drama stage, why hasn't you been developing in film and television?

Wang Xinyu: Maybe the stage is more pure for me, and the filming cycle of film and television dramas is generally relatively long, and I must first ensure that the drama performance task of our unit Beijing Renyi is really engraved in the bones, if the outside film and television shooting conflicts with the theater performance, it will definitely be abandoned, so it will give up some other opportunities.

Cover News: That's why the character image can be presented so well, and if there is an extra utilitarian idea, there may be no way to do it so extremely, right?

Wang Xinyu: Yes, although many theater actors are poor now, they can't buy that heart. Of course, we also need to appeal to the society, hoping to get the support of more audiences, and many of the actors who are really involved in the drama stage are actually very poor, and really love to support themselves for so many years. But it is precisely because of love that I don't feel that it is persistence, or a kind of enjoyment, a way of life.
