In August 1919, Chen Jiageng hired 10 national educational celebrities Cai Yuanpei, Huang Yanpei, Wang Jingwei, Yu Rizhang, Guo Bingwen, Hu Dunfu, Huang Wan, Ye Yuan, and Deng Cuiying as preparers in Shanghai.
In October 1919, the first meeting of the Preparatory Committee of the Private Xiamen University was held to draw up the "Organizational Outline of Xiamen University", and the meeting elected Deng Cuiying as the first president of Xiamen University, Zheng Zhenwen as the provost, and He Gongdang as the general administrator.

<h3>National Xiamen University</h3>
On July 1, 1937, at the request of Chen Jiageng, the Nationalist government in Nanjing agreed to change the private Xiamen University to the State.
On July 6, 1937, Dr. Saben dong, a famous physicist and professor of Tsinghua University, became the president of Xiamen University.
On September 4, 1937, due to the Japanese invasion of Xiamen, the school moved to Gulangyu Island; in November, the school decided to move out of Tingting; on December 24, the relocation began; and arrived safely on January 12, 1938. In May, the building of Xiamen University was blown up by the Japanese. During the period in Changting, Fujian, teachers and students overcame many difficulties and insisted on teaching, and the scale of the school continued to expand. By the time of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Xiamen University had set up four colleges and 15 departments in arts, science, law and commerce, and the number of students had increased from more than 300 to more than 1,000.
On September 19, 1945, the Executive Yuan of the National Government appointed Dr. Wang Deyao as president of National Xiamen University.
On June 1, 1946, the headquarters of Xiamen University began to move back to Xiamen, and all walks of life in Changting held a farewell meeting at the stadium, giving away a large plaque engraved with four big characters of "Strong in the South".
