The SpDP nominates a candidate for speaker of the new Bundestag

On October 20, local time, the German Social Democratic Party nominated Bebel Bass, vice chairman of the party's parliamentary group, as the speaker of the new Bundestag. If Bass is eventually elected, she will be another woman after Susmut to serve as Speaker of the Bundestag.

German sociologist and chairman of the Berlin Center for Social Sciences, Almendinger, and dablow, former chairman of the German Ethics Council, recently issued an open letter calling for a woman to be the speaker of the new Bundestag, because if the SPD nominates the current chairman of the parliamentary group, Mutzenitz, as the president of the new Bundestag, then the president, the new chancellor and the new speaker of the Bundestag are all men.

It is understood that after internal deliberations, the SPD parliamentary caucus decided to nominate Bebel Bass as speaker of the new Bundestag, while Mutzenitz will temporarily remain as chairman of the SPD parliamentary caucus. German media said the move eased the pressure on incumbent President Steinmeier to be re-elected. Ahead of the election, Steinmeier had made it clear that he wanted to be re-elected in February. If Muzzenitz takes up the position of Speaker of parliament, the SPD may be trying to elect a woman as federal president, causing Steinmeier to abandon his quest for re-election.

It is reported that the German Bundestag will elect the members of the parliamentary presidium on October 26. (Reporter Yu Peng)
