The theme of this conference is still "Lessons from covid-19". Un Secretary-General António Guterres called for an equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines at the opening ceremony of the day.
At the opening ceremony of the day, European Commission President von der Leyen stressed that international cooperation is essential for global health. She called for a global standard for health care to combat health threats that transcend national borders.
In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres denounced "vaccine nationalism" and vaccine hoarding, calling for a rational distribution of vaccines. Guterres warned that unequal distribution of vaccines means more deaths, worse health system breakdowns and greater economic hardship.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the COVID-19 pandemic can be contained if governments and pharmaceutical manufacturers commit to fairness and solidarity and to provide more vaccines to the world's most vulnerable countries. Tedros stressed that the target of 40 per cent vaccination rates in all countries is achievable by the end of the year. He called on G20 countries to implement COVID-19 vaccine donation programs to help other vulnerable countries.
The summit was held from the 24th to the 26th, attracting more than 6,000 participants, and more than 300 officials and experts from international organizations and countries will make speeches at the summit.
The World Health Summit is an annual academic forum founded in 2009 and is currently guardiand by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French Chancellor Emmanuel Macron.
