Large terrestrial rodents, with a body length of 80 cm, a tail length of 20–25 cm and a weight of 20 kg, are most notably marked by long spines on the skin, with spines up to 30 cm long, the longest of all mammalian spines, known as spine feathers, covering the back and body sides of the South African porcupine. The spines on the tail are shorter. The thorn feathers are easy to erect. The divisions are in Central to Southern Africa.
