"Selfie Gorilla" died a short life witnessing the revival of mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas are large and peaceful, and have been described as "gentle giants". For nearly 20 years, poachers have brutally hunted mountain gorilla populations for profiteering. In 2007, the mother of "Ndacasi" died during the hunt, when the 2-month-old "Ndacasi" was rescued by patrol member Bauma and brought back to Virunga National Park to be raised.

Due to severe psychological trauma, "Endakasi" is not suitable for returning to nature, has been living in a national park, and has gradually become the image spokesperson for the mountain gorilla in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and has also starred in the documentary "Vilonga" that protects mountain gorillas.

In 2019, selfies of "Endakassi" and breeders went viral online, once again raising awareness of mountain gorillas.

The life of "Endakassi" witnessed the revival of mountain gorillas. According to Reuters, there were only 720 wild mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2007, and in 2021 it has increased to 1,063, an increase of 47%.
