The source is the seeds of the legume flat-stemmed astragalus or Astragalus sativa. In late autumn and early winter, when the fruit is ripe but not yet cracked, the stem is cut off, dried and the seeds are laid, removed from impurities, and then dried.
Original form (1) Astragalus oblate-stemmed astragalus is also known as: Astragalus cranberry.
It is a tall perennial herb that can reach a height of more than 1 m and is covered with short stiff hairs. The main root is thick and long, and the stem is slightly flattened and lying down. Singular pinnate compound leaves, alternate, with short stalks; small, lanceolate; short petioles, oval leaves, 6 to 14 mm long, 3 to 7 mm wide, blunt or slightly absent at the apex, with fine tips, blunt to blunt at the base, full margin, green above, glabrous, gray-green below. It is a perennial herb growing 20 to 100 cm tall. The stem is erect, ribbed and nearly glabrous. Singular pinnate compound leaves, 8 to 12 cm long; leaflets 21 to 31, oval or ovate oval, 1.5 to 2 cm long, 5 to 9 mm wide, blunt at the apex, with a short tip, rounded or tapering at the base, hairless above, sparse short soft hairs below. The inflorescence is axillary; the flowers are majority; calyx-shaped, membranous, calyx triangular lanceolate, nearly glabrous; the corolla is yellow, about 1.5 cm long, the wing petals are 2/3 of the keel petals; the ovary has a long stalk. The pods are oval, 1 to 1.5 cm long and 8 to 10 mm wide, leathery, swollen, densely striated, and cracked when ripe. Seeds 10 to 12, kidney-shaped, seed umbilical depression is deep, yellow-brown.
