Yu opera is known for its sonorous and atmospheric singing voice, moderate and measured, smooth speech, clear pronunciation, mellow charm, vivid and lively, flesh and blood, and good at expressing the inner emotions of the characters, and is widely welcomed by people from all walks of life for its high degree of artistry. Because its musical accompaniment is played with jujube wood, it was named Henan Zizi in the early days.

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Culture, in addition to Henan Province, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Taiwan and other provinces and municipalities have professional Yu opera troupes.

In November 2019, the General Office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism organized the inspection and adjustment of the protection units of the national intangible cultural heritage representative projects, and the Yuju opera protection unit was the Henan Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center.
