Just eight minutes later, Salah continued his form with a brilliant goal. The Egyptian cut inside the penalty area, past Three Atletico defenders and fired a shot into the net, where Jeffrey Condobia passed the ball to the helpless Jan Oblak. Just five minutes later, Nabi Keita doubled the lead with a brilliant volley from the edge of atletico after receiving Felipe's routine cross. But the hosts pulled a goal back 20 minutes earlier. Atletico's corner kick broke through to Cork from the edge of the Liverpool penalty area and his shot was deflected offside by Antoine Griezmann, although Thomas Lemar was in offside and blocked by Joel Matip.

The former Barcelona man soon had a great chance to equalise after being broken through by Kieran Trippier and Allison one-on-one, but the Brazilian stepped forward to deny him. But Griezmann didn't wait long to finally find the opportunity to make up for it. João Felix entered the penalty area and caught the attention of Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while his strike partner dribbled the ball into the open space and found the far corner.

Both Felix and Lemar had the chance to turn the game around before half-time, but Alisson was on the sidelines to stop both of them. Oblak went all out to block Sadio Mane's header at the start of the second half, and then Alisson came to Liverpool's rescue and rejected Yannick Carrasco from close range. But because Atletico were in an advantageous position, Griezmann was given a red card for his high-level challenge to Roberto Firmino, who played in the Madrid phalanx while trying to control the ball.

Förgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were both close to scoring for Liverpool as they looked to take advantage of their single-man advantage, with the Reds scoring a penalty when Mario Hermoso attacked Diogo Jota. Salah stepped forward and gave Oblak another lead in the wrong way, but soon after, when Jota tripped Jose Gimenez, Atletico thought they had their own penalty. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the referee overturned his decision and ruled that the Uruguayan did not have enough contact to get the penalty. Angel Correa had half a chance to score in injury time but could not control his shots, and Liverpool persevered, eventually winning 3-2 against Atletico Madrid.
