What are the islands in Shanghai? Chongming Island, Changxing Island, Big and Small Jinshan Island? In addition to these well-known islands, there is also an island in the Huangpu River in the downtown area of Shanghai - Fuxing Island! There is also a "story with a story" park on the island.

The history of the island' change
Fuxing Island is the only small island on the Huangpu River, originally called Zhoujiazui Island, named after a village in Zhoujiazui on the Huangpu River. The island starts from the Dinghai Road Bridge in the south and is close to the mouth of the Qiujiang River in the north, with a crescent shape, a length of 3.42 kilometers, the widest point in the middle of the country is 550 meters, and an area of about 1.133 square kilometers, which is the only enclosed inland island in the Pujiang River and has unique natural geographical conditions.
In the winter of 1927, the Shanghai Junpu Bureau bought this official beach land for 400,000 taels of silver and developed it. In December of that year, the Dinghai Road Bridge was built at the southern end of the island, which was the only passage between land and the island at that time. The Junpu Bureau built roads on the island, named Junpu West Road and Junpu Pudong Road, and also built the Junpu Bureau Staff Club in the middle of the island for foreign employees to vacation. There are civil construction workshops and raw material warehouses on the island, and the main business is the construction and repair of guide embankments, barges, pontoons, and factory buildings. The island also has the GreatEr China Shipyard, the China Vegetable Oil Company, and the Mobil Fire Oil Company.
After the Japanese occupation in 1937, it was renamed Dinghai Island, which was named after the Dinghai Road (it was also once called Showa Island from 1939 to 1941). In 1945, it was renamed Fuxing Island to commemorate the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan. Later, the Shanghai office of the Kuomintang Naval Command and the battalion headquarters of the guard battalion were stationed on Fuxing Island, and in July 1947, the island was transferred to the Junpu Bureau. However, due to the lack of management and repair, the island is dusty on sunny days, and the roads are muddy, deserted and sparsely populated on rainy days. Later, it became a storage station for the surplus materials of the US military, including imported Pinnen milk powder and water bottle raincoats that were once popular in Shanghai.
After liberation, Fuxing Island became a base for industry and fishing. Fuel, petroleum, warehousing and other enterprises have been opened, and various storage and transportation warehouses such as Zhonghua Shipyard and Shanghai Fish Factory have been built. In 1958, the volunteer labor of the city's Communist Youth League members rebuilt Xingdao Junpu West Road, which was renamed Gongqing Road. In the middle of the island there is Fuxing Island Park, and in the north there are a small number of residents.
Exquisite park in a historical context
With the island's rich history, the park on the island is also full of mystery. It is said that after the Japanese occupation, the park was converted into a Japanese-style garden, and evergreen trees and spherical shrubs were planted in the garden, and cherry blossoms were planted everywhere; after the victory of the War of Resistance, it was restored to the Junpo Bureau, and a "Monument to the Recovery of Fuxing Island" (now destroyed) was built in the garden.
After driving through the Hai'an Road Bridge, which is about 20 to 30 meters long, visitors can enter Fuxing Island, the only small island in the Huangpu River, and Fuxing Island Park is in the middle of the island.
Fuxing Island Park has been built for more than 50 years, and after the renovation, the barren bare land for many years has been transformed into a large lawn, and the original unique Japanese garden style has been restored, and a wet area covered with moss and ferns in the park has been specially protected by bamboo hedges.
There are very few tourists in the park, and only birds can be heard chirping. Soon after entering the park, I saw a large lawn dotted with some camphor trees. Not far from the lawn is the brick and wood Bailu Villa, which is said to have been the villa where Chiang Kai-shek briefly lived before leaving Shanghai.
The island is planned for the future
The construction plan of Fuxing Island has long been unveiled, which covers the three concepts of ecological island, leisure island and forum island, which will make the only closed inland island in the Huangpu River shine brightly, and a dazzling pearl will shine on the East Bund development belt.
"Eco-island" means that within the planned area of 144 hectares on Fuxing Island, the green area will reach 75%. The native trees on the island include 71 varieties of camphor, magnolia, black pine and other varieties, and more than 3,000 green plants. A long reedy-based wetland at the eastern end of the island will be preserved, and 12 hectares of water will be opened up on the island surrounded by water. The developed Fuxing Island will be green and full of fun.
"Leisure island" means that in addition to the construction of an international conference center on the island, an international recreation center, an international leisure and entertainment center, a yacht club, a water bus terminal and other landscape buildings will be built to provide public services for the society.
The name "Forum Island" will make it a place for international academic exchange conferences, and provide high-quality services for international business conferences and exhibitions.
This revival island integrating leisure, tourism and entertainment can be hailed as a unique ecological living area around the island in the central urban area, if you have the opportunity, you might as well go and experience it for yourself.
