In order to advocate the harmony between man and nature, encourage the public to enter nature, understand butterflies and ecological knowledge, and feel the charm of nature, on May 30, the Guangdong Forestry Bureau, together with Hong Kong, Macao Nature Observation Association, nature enthusiasts and others in the country's first nature reserve - Dinghushan National Nature Reserve Butterfly Valley, jointly launched the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Nature Observation Competition.
With the theme of "Caring for Butterflies and Protecting Nature", the competition is the first large-scale nature observation activity with the theme of butterfly viewing in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and will focus on the natural ecology of "Butterfly Dance Flying", and carry out activities such as nature notes such as butterfly viewing, nature photography competitions, and live broadcasts of butterflies. On the same day, more than 50 primary and secondary school students and 260,000 netizens participated in the activities through the "Cloud View Butterfly" to jointly welcome the "International Children's Day" in a unique way.

About 500 species of butterflies have been recorded in the wild in the province
Guangdong Province is one of the provinces with the richest biodiversity in the country, the province has built 1362 various types of nature reserves, accounting for 16.39% of the province's land area, becoming one of the provinces with the largest number of natural protected areas in the country, initially forming a natural protection system with complete types of protection, reasonable layout, ecological benefits and social benefits, and is the earliest and largest number of provinces in the country.
Guangdong is particularly rich in wildlife resources, with 774 species of terrestrial vertebrate wild animals, more than 7,700 species of vascular plants, and nearly 300 species of guangdong endemic plants.
At present, there are 30 orders, 370 families, 3487 genera and 8100 species of insects in Guangdong. As a highly ornamental insect, there are about 500 species recorded in the field in the province, including the national first-class protected butterfly species Golden Spotted Beaked Phoenix, the internationally protected Golden Butterfly and the Butterfly, as well as rare species such as the Broad-spanned Butterfly, the Warm Dawn Butterfly, the Arrow Ring Butterfly, and the Black Purple Butterfly.
Dinghu Mountain Butterfly Valley has 198 species of butterflies, including brown spotted butterflies, green phoenix butterflies, silver hook phoenix butterflies, swallow phoenix butterflies, fine-striped phoenix butterflies and so on. "Butterfly Viewing" is a nature education activity that integrates knowledge and fun, and the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Nature Observation Competition was carried out in the form of "Butterfly Viewing". At the event site, representatives of primary and secondary school students painted and created nearly 200 species of butterflies, and watched the butterflies under the leadership of teachers.
The scene also set up "Nature Detective" fun games, butterfly science primary school and other interactive links, attracting many students to participate. "I used to think butterflies were so beautiful, but this event gave me a deeper understanding of butterflies and stimulated my interest in natural observation." 9-year-old Zi Xin sighed.
Under the new normal of epidemic prevention and control, the "First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Natural Butterfly Viewing Live BroadcastIng Activity" was launched on the same day of the event, inviting netizens to feel the style of butterflies online. During the live broadcast, butterfly research experts were also invited to teach butterfly knowledge to the majority of netizens, stimulate the interest of the general public in viewing butterflies, and enhance the public's awareness of loving butterflies and protecting nature. According to statistics, 260,000 people participated in the online butterfly viewing activities.
Experts introduced that the number of butterflies and living conditions and ecological environment are closely related, in recent years, with the new round of greening Guangdong action and the Pearl River Delta National Forest City Cluster and other key ecological projects in depth, Guangdong's ecological environment has been greatly improved, the number of butterflies has also increased.
Nature notes and nature photography competitions were launched, with a total prize money of 60,000 yuan
It is worth mentioning that on the same day of the event, the nature note and nature photography competition of the butterfly watching class was launched at the same time, and from June 1, it was officially opened to the whole society. The competition set up a number of awards such as gold award, silver award, bronze award, best moment award, best ecology award, best record, etc., with a total prize money of 61800 yuan.
The general public, primary and secondary school students can take the form of painting, photography and other ways to truly record the wonderful moments of butterflies, and submit articles through the official platform of the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Nature Observation Competition - "Butterfly Dance Flying" or Guangdong Forestry Network (submission email: [email protected]). The call for papers is from June 1 to August 31, 2020.
The nature notes are based on the premise of observing the four developmental periods of butterflies, and are recorded on the drawing paper through pictures and texts, showing the beauty of butterflies in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. Nature photography records the most beautiful moments of butterflies with images, shows the typical, important, precious and essential natural ecosystems in the forestry nature reserves of Guangdong Province, and shows the richest biodiversity and the most beautiful natural landscapes. The Guangdong Forestry Bureau hopes to inspire the public to enter nature, protect nature, pay attention to wild animals and insects, and build an ecological civilization through this activity.
In recent years, Guangdong Province has made new breakthroughs in nature education, successfully held the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Nature Education Forum, established the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Nature Education Alliance, identified the first batch of 20 nature education bases, and compiled and implemented the "Guangdong Forestry Ecological Culture Construction Plan (2019-2025)".
In the next step, Guangdong Province will strengthen the inclusiveness of ecological services, provide convenience for the people to experience ecology and receive nature education nearby, vigorously promote natural observation activities such as butterfly watching, insect watching, bird watching, etc., build various nature education bases and science popularization venues, build a guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao nature education ecosystem, and create a national nature education demonstration province.
