About Caucasian dogs

For centuries, Caucasian Shepherds have been used to protect property from intruders, protect livestock from large and small predators such as wolves and coyotes, and perform many other duties. In modern times, especially in the West, they are most commonly domestic partners and watchdogs. Caucasian dogs are diverse, depending on their home region. For nearly a century, there have been two varieties and standards: one is the mountain type, the other is long-haired, weighing heavier than the steppe type, and the other is the shorter, lighter-weight steppe type Caucasus. Other names in the Caucasus include Ovcharka, Caucasian Shepherd, Kokassky Owl, and Kaukaschiche Sherhunde.

history

Over the centuries, eastern Europe along the Caucasus Mountains has hosted many countries with different cultures, calling it the Homeland of the Caucasus. The Caucasian mountainous regions of the territories of Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kabbardino-Balkaria, Dachstan, Ossetia, Turkey, Chechnya, Ingushetia and Iran are also home to Caucasian Orfchaka or Caucasian Shepherds. But the Caucasus's first appearances came in Germany in the 1930s. Many studies have shown that Caucasian dogs are close relatives of Balkan shepherds and Asian mastiffs.

Historically, Caucasian Shepherds were used to protect cattle, flocks, and shelters from predators. A reference is made to a large grinding dog used by the army of the Armenian Tsar Tigeran, dating back to the first century BC. The selection of this variety began in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. In the process of material selection, it cultivates mandatory qualities such as physical strength, self-confidence, fearlessness, hearing, vision, and waterproof layer. All these qualities, as well as endurance, allow people to use Caucasian Shepherds in a variety of climatic conditions, including the harshest climatic conditions.
