After what happened to Boss Donald and his team and the behind-the-scenes crime master, Sever (Charlize Theron), in Fast and Furious 8, Boss Donald has retired and settled with his family. Unfortunately, due to Donald's brother Jacob Torreto (John Senna), causing trouble after working with Sever, his retirement is short. Donald had no choice but to continue to gather his team and reconcile his brothers. Surprisingly, super 9 also confirmed that in addition to other familiar faces of Tokyo Drift, Han Yahui returned from death. The first hint of space travel came in the first trailer for The Road to F9 in Miami, where a handful of new cars were exposed. Although Fast and Furious has come out of street racing, the car is still a prominent aspect of the film. Among the new cars in the trailer is a modified Pontiac Fiero. Unlike the typical speed and power aspects of the shape, this coupe is equipped with rockets.
In the trailer, Pontiac Fiero can be seen being driven by Roman. The car appears to have been built by supporting character Jason Tobin (Earl) in The Rapid 3 and looks like it was being tested on some sort of runway. Rocket-powered cars have shown extreme speed, faster than any nitrogen-accelerated car in the past.
It's possible that Pontiac Fiero is just the first prototype, building some sort of flying machine for Donald to go into space. When he faced Jacob, he could arrange for a team to build something. This isn't the first time the team has tested performance before modifying the finished product. In this case, the rocket car may just be a small version of what Donald used to leave the Earth's atmosphere at Speed 9.

It is possible that there is a superweapon or threatening satellite in space that is controlled by Sever. Given that Dom had such a close connection to Jacob's family ties to threats, he may feel it was his duty to stop the plan.
