Southern Metropolis Daily: What is the opportunity for your wheat field music to sign several Guangdong bands?
Old Wolf: I think Guangdong independent music in the past two years is quite amazing, there are some new bands and new sounds, before I did not pay much attention to Guangdong, as a result, these years, the new band is still quite surprising, we are ready to do a plan, to do a compilation album about the new generation of bands in Guangdong in recent years, I have always wanted to go to Guangzhou, want to go to the field to understand the whole environment.
Nandu: Guangdong has indeed seen a number of new generation bands emerge in recent years, but it is still relatively difficult to enter the public eye, what suggestions will you give in terms of support and promotion?
Old Wolf: I can feel that the public level still pays less attention to original music. Everyone's focus is still on variety shows, or some head artists, which have changed in the past two years, and more young people can go to Livehouse and go to music festivals. I think it is still necessary to establish a channel that can make these good musicians have a good living environment. These newly formed new generation bands, it is impossible to go to the head at once, can not get big endorsements, but always let them survive, which is what I have been paying attention to and thinking about.
Nandu: Have you been paying attention to the new band ecology?
Old Wolf: Yes, the new generation of bands can't make money, don't have the opportunity to perform, and there may be very little people to know. Everyone's music appreciation taste is easily affected by variety shows and large platforms, and the truly meaningful original music space will be squeezed. There are also some platforms and investors who are encouraging original music, or hope to establish a system.
Nandu: Will this idea continue to do a compilation album for a city's landmark livehouse?
Old Wolf: Yes. We did "Ten Points of Conduct" for the 10th anniversary of Beijing SCHOL, "Chengdu 2020" by Chengdu Bistro, "Good Morning Nanjing" by Nanjing Euler, and "Nine Songs" looking back at traditional music. In addition to the independent bands in Guangdong, the next plan is also preparing a wine ball club in Xinjiang and Hangzhou, hoping to do this project a little more thoroughly, under the existing conditions, do more, and do something practical will make me more excited.
Nandu: So your idea is to help independent musicians by doing compilations?
Old Wolf: I still want to do something more realistic, a while ago there was a topic about Internet terminology, involution, flattening and the like, I don't think I will say this, I found that a lot of times is just talking, can play a limited role in the actual role. Internet platforms value revenue, value traffic, there is nothing wrong, but the short-term realization of music is not so fast, or a little need to have a little bit of a child's heart.
Nandu: One of the slogans of our southern music festival is "with the heart of a child, pass on the sound of the times", but it is not easy to really do things, right?
Old Wolf: It's really hard, there are some very good works, I personally think very good musicians, make good music, it's not so easy to be heard by everyone. A lot of what should be done has also been done, such as Weibo has also been sent, the circle of friends has also been sent, sometimes the circle of friends is lively for a day, and after a day has passed, it may sink to the bottom, and it can't turn over any waves. This industry still needs culture, aesthetics, visionary investors and platforms, just look at the profit margin is very short-term, original and independent music is actually very long-tail effect.
B Collision
Born in 1968, the old wolf still has a passion for original music and independent bands, although the reality is often cold, he from the identity of the artist and the label manager, not only to experience the collision between the ages, but also to experience the Internet online and offline, as well as the collision inside and outside the industry, but the old wolf imagines that it is still hoped that there will be a nationwide north-south collision, so that the original music has more splashes and bring good musicians to play a greater energy.
Nandu: As the head of a music label, and being a singer are different dimensions, what enlightenment have you given yourself in the past few years?
Old Wolf: I am lucky to have the opportunity to do these things, and there will also be psychological pressure, that is, to do a lot of things, the effect is not as obvious as imagined. I myself come from an artist background, and I want musicians to be better off and get paid relatively fairly for their labor.
Nandu: What is your ideal indie music environment?
Old Wolf: I have been thinking for a while, that is, to see what kind of cooperation and interaction between the north and the south, the communication between the independent musicians in the north and the independent bands in Guangdong and the south, everyone collided with some momentum. For example, Gojo, before "Summer of the Band", was already associated with all kinds of interesting musicians across the country. It is completely possible to connect some national musician cooperation projects to do something interesting, which can bring up a lot of good musicians to exert their energy.
Nandu: It is true that many music festivals are too regional and local, and this kind of north-south collision, and the coordination between various companies, will be very cumbersome, right?
Old Wolf: There may be some restrictions between companies that can't be touched, but musicians can not care about each other, and musicians still want to play with interesting people. For example, if we do "Nine Songs", Zhang Qi, Ou Jiayuan, Su Yang, people from different companies can participate together, and I think it is very good.
Nandu: Is it possible that these national ideas of the collision of the North and the South will be realized through the platform?
Old Wolf: From the perspective of the original music itself, the platform just puts the plate up, and it is difficult to have real investment without enough revenue. Or hope to be able to do interesting things from the music itself as a starting point, there may be no rapid actual income, but invisibly will get value-added, this is not a short-term realization logic. It's a beautiful thing I imagine, in terms of distribution, musicians can also get the benefits in a really fair way.
Nandu: You still hope that through this similar north-south collision, the new band will be seen by more people, right?
Old Wolf: Yes, to be able to have an environment and occasion for a new band to go. I sometimes say to our newly signed bands, I'm sorry I didn't give you a better chance to perform and environment. At my age, the so-called aesthetics or preferences will have some solidification, but the pop music industry itself is a particularly young thing that needs younger blood. The new band and new musicians excite me even more, and it's really more fun.
C Enthusiasm
Old Wolf will also go to livehouse, but also to pay attention to and promote the new generation of bands and excellent original musicians, he hopes to be able to enter the production process of musical works, explore and collect more real expressions. But his own new album has been away for a long time, but he is not in a hurry to make and release, he does not want to just express his opinions, but wants to do more things, do more things he wants to do.
Nandu: So will you still have a new album of your own?
Old Wolf: Anyway, I personally don't have such a strong desire now, and if I think about it occasionally, I'll just get it. When I have time, I still want to go to livehouse, to see new bands, to see the original musicians, which is more interesting to me.
Nandu: Speaking of which, when did you start helping these original musicians?
Old Wolf: Actually, I didn't help them.
Nandu: Everyone can see what you have done, is this not called help?
Old Wolf: No, no, really no help. I just love their music, and I think they can play with me. When we first went out to perform, we all used accompaniment tapes, and later I played with Wan Xiaoli, and Ma Tiao also played the piano for me, and performed with them, which changed my particularly tired state; playing music with them, I felt interesting again, in fact, it was an encouragement to me. So I'm grateful for their influence on me, and I really like their work, like Wan Xiaoli's "It's Not As Bad as Imagined", like the era of the river bar, wild children, little river people, their works really touched me. They have always been in good shape, although they are not rich and expensive, but they are still enthusiastic about doing it.
Nandu: So is it still the folk song that attracts you the most?
Old Wolf: Actually, my own favorite things are particularly mixed, I also like a particularly irritable rock, like THE KIND OF SHOOL PUNK, I also like the original music, I like the live atmosphere. My core attitude now is not to give myself too much pressure, and when I am old, I can do something I want to do. My own stuff, is to spend a lot of energy, so it's particularly slow, I did almost three years on my last album, it's a particularly long process.
Nandu: You rarely write things yourself, at this age, will there still be something to express voluntarily?
Old Wolf: Yes, but there is no such strong desire, that is, on social media, I now have to warn myself every day, to suppress a little. For a while I liked to think of Weibo as a tree hole, there will be emotional catharsis, and then I found out that it is not right, it is particularly easy to be misunderstood, or cause some unnecessary disputes, it is not interesting.
Nandu: Like saying that Weibo is "poor crazy" that time?
Old Wolf: It was supposed to be me spitting out a groove in the middle of the night, and then it turned into an event. Many people want to interview, I have refused, I said this little thing can not change anything, there is no point in enlarging and there is no point, it is better to come to a little more practical more affordable, I prefer to be affordable. I haven't done an interview in so many years, because I think it's better to express opinions than to do more things, and the Internet environment is not lacking in opinions, and there is no practical significance in arguing around.
Nandu: So you went from singer to label manager, just want to do more practical things, right?
Old Wolf: This is still thanks to Xu Yi, who supported me to do it, and now I want to come for three years, and I have done some things, such as "Nine Songs", sometimes I am quite touched to listen to myself at home, because it comes from the true expression. But I don't know how it is in the minds of others, anyway, I think it's quite funny, and I'm very lucky, before I simply liked the works of some musicians, such as Wan Xiaoli and Song Dongye, now I can mix some. I always feel that a work, the actual production process is the most exciting, the process of creation, the process of recording, constantly modifying, once it becomes a finished product, there is no way to change, just resign yourself to fate.
